Beer Review – Schells Snowstorm 2008

The August Schell Brewing Co. in new Ulm, Minn., treats us yet again to another well-done seasonal.

snowstorm_w.jpgThis year’s Snowstorm offering is a Weihnachtsbier.

Snowstorm pours a clear auburn color with a tall tan head. Its aroma is of sourdough-ish bready malt with some noble hop aroma notes.

The initial flavor is of dark rye bread with some dark friut notes. The beer turns very spicy at mid-tongue that morphs into a black pepper spiciness at the back of the throat.

There is a sort of mild sour flavor (the label notes sourdough flavors), but I found these flavors to be very complimentary to the brew.

This is a very nice beer that is similar in flavor to an amped up and spicy Marzen.

The finish is fairly long and ends on a peppery, bready note with some nutty undertones.

The beer is listed at 6% alcohol by volume and I consider the 2008 edition of Snowstorm to be medium bodied and medium flavored. I recommend the beer as a worthy winter seasonal.

Snowstorm was purchased at Miller liquor in North Sioux City, SD.

This is a new one I must try which thankfully I have seen recently in our local grocer beer dept here in Southwestern Wisconsin.
