Is it art?

Monday, March 26th, 2007

I received an interesting compliment the other week.

A woman came in to order a reprint of a photo I had made of the sun rising over the Big Sioux and Missouri River.

When she came in to pick it up she requested that I sign and date the image so she could have a signed copy. She stated that she purchased a fair amoutn of art photography and considered this image to be among the better that she had purchased.

It was a little embarrassing for me, as I usually don’t think of my (or most newspaper photography for that matter) to be “art”.

I was highly complimented to have the photo considered that way and was wondering what you think. Can the words art and documentary be used to describe the same image?

Today’s sessions are focusing on the nuts and bolts of video and multimedia. Our sister papers are really doing some amazing things!

Blogging at 70 MPH

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

Well, it’s 8:52 am and as I write this I’m doing about 70 miles per hour down Interstate 80 on my way to an online seminar being presented in Moline by Lee Enterprises, the parent company of the Journal. Aren’t cell phone modems great!

(Be not afraid, for I’m not driving)

A group of us Journal-types will be learning to use the our web site to better deliver information to you. I also anticipate we will be shown new onlines tools to better deliver content such as audio slide shows, podcasts and video.

I know there really isn’t much exciting in this post……I just wanted to be the first Journal person to blog while going down the interstate!

Stay tuned for more.
