Shooting a high school wrestling dual meet can be challenging, mainly because of the lighting. Many of the schools, including North High, turn off all of the light in the gym except for one light above the mat. It looks cool for the spectators, but it makes it tough for photographers. Often I would shoot at a high ASA, set my exposure for the highlights, and then adjust my flash to a low power setting to fill in the shadows.
But now I am shooting with a 200 f/2 lens which lets in lots of light, and using a Canon 50D camera which is much improved in the higher ASA’s compared to previous generations of digital cameras. So I decided to try shooting without flash. The above photo was shot on manual exposure, ASA 3200, 1/400 second at f/2.
