Reporter Jesse Claeys arranged for a few local tattoo artist to come to the Journal office Sunday to be photographed for a story about the artists favorite tattoos. We do have have a grungy, makeshift studio set up for video upstairs, but since it was Sunday, and since no one else was around in the office, and since I had to set up lights anyway, I decided to use the spacious front lobby of the Journal office.
I used two shoe-mount flashes, one on a light stand with a white diffusion panel as my main light and sat one on a counter top to use as a back light. I also used a gold reflector to add some fill light.

The flashes were set to manual power and triggered with radio slaves. The main light was set to 1/2 power and the back light was set at 1/4 power. The light on the subjects gave me an exposure of 1/250 second at f/11 a ASA 200. And since the lights were hitting the subject and not the background, it allowed the distracting background to fade to black.
You can read Jesse’s story in Sunday’s paper in the Living section. And if you a fan of tattoos, make sure you check out the Midwest Tattoo Tour at the Sioux City Convention Center that is going on all weekend.
