Woman calls 911 to report a drunk driver – her

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

The last Crime Watch post was about mug shots. This one proves that 911 calls can be just as entertaining.

A friend of mine heard this on Kool 99.5’s morning show. Mary Strey, of Granton, Wisc., called 911 to report she was driving drunk on Halloween.

Since I don’t know her blood-alcohol content, I’m not sure what Strey’s true motivation for calling herself in – but in the end nobody got hurt and she did the right thing.

You have to give her props for that.

While looking for this audio clip, I also found a second 911 clip of someone reporting themself as a drunk driver.

Oddly enough, it is another Wisconsin woman.

SIOUX CITY — Thinking about making a late-night run to the corner store to buy some cool refreshing beer?

It’s not a bad idea, but you might want to drive instead of walk.
A Sioux City teen faces a felony robbery charge for allegedly attacking another man and stealing his beer.

According to court documents, Luis Flores, 17, pleaded not guilty Monday to one charge of second-degree robbery, a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

This seems to happen a lot in Sioux City.

Police log: A smorgasbord of Sioux City crime

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

There’s been some interesting things in the Sioux City police log lately, dealing with a wide variety of situations – alcohol, pets, trampolines, flowers and, of course, petty crime of all kind.

None of them were big enough to warrant a story, at least not according to the information I received, but I thought you might find them interesting.

Robbers on the prowl (again) for beer

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Two men were injured this weekend in separate robberies with the same ultimate prize — Budweiser beer.

Although there were several instances last year of people stealing beer, including at local Kum and Go gas stations, these are the first alcohol-related robberies to come across my radar this summer.

And, like last year, they were after Budweiser.

Police log: Some jailbirds fly right to police

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Flashing red and blue lights inspire some suspects to rev the engine, mash the accelerator to the floor and speed away until they crash or drive across a set of stop sticks.

Much like Pablo Elias-Lopez is accused of doing on June 19.

(P.S. I knew that name was familiar)

This is not one of those suspects. (more…)

No, someone was trying to break out.

Murder suspect nabbed after dozen years on run

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

This weekend, Sioux City police investigating a hit-and-run traffic accident discovered they had more than just a bad driver on their hands.

They had Andrew Carlos Orellana, a man accused first-degree murder for allegedly gunning down a South Sioux City teen in a gang-related shooting in 1997.

After 12 years evading police, it was truly a minor accident that got Orellana caught.
