Stealing from old people is mean

Identity theft and forgery seem pretty common these days, but some things are still just plain wrong.

On Monday, a 29-year-old Schaller, Iowa, woman was charged with forgery and credit card theft.

According to court documents, Nichole Frank admitted to illegally using an 80-year-old woman’s credit card to buy items in Storm Lake and Sioux City.

The victim is in a rest home.

Promise of “big money” lands man in jail

A Sioux City man trying to avoid undesirable traffic violations in hopes of someday getting a drivers’ license instead wound up in jail on a bribery charge.

All because he allegedly offered the arresting officer “big money” not to cite him.

An ex-girlfriend you might not want to mess with

A Sioux City woman received probation today for ramming her car into another woman’s car as it rolled down Court Street.

The woman, Elizabeth Mead, also was accused of allegedly attacking the woman and possibly, although it’s unclear, trying to hit the victim with her car.

Why? Police say the victim was dating Mead’s ex-boyfriend.

Cooperation is a good thing

A Sioux City teen facing drug charges allegedly told a police officer who found marijuana in a car the teen was riding in that he had more drugs back at his house.

According to court documents, 18-year-old Pablo Elias-Lopez pleaded not guilty on Monday to possession with intent to deliver marijuana and violating the state’s drug tax stamp law.

Police began questioning Elias-Lopez, according to court documents, after they found an ounce of marijuana on Oct. 8 while searching a 1998 Pontiac Gran Prix parked at Regency Trailer Park in Sioux City.

Cell phone plan provokes rage in the Siouxland

Tired of getting shafted by your cell phone company?

So was Nathan Schable.

The 28-year-old Dakota City, Neb., man pleaded not guilty this week to second-degree criminal mischief after allegedly losing his cool at an Alltel Wireless store in Sioux City. His trial is scheduled for Jan. 27 in Sioux City.

According to the criminal complaint and affidavit, Schable went to the Singing Hills Boulevard store on Feb. 4 to get a replacement for his phone, which he’d dropped in water.

No new phone for you, he was told, because your insurance policy doesn’t cover that.

According to a criminal complaint and affidavit, Schable was not amused.

Sonic boom wasn’t from us, official says

The mystery of the loud noise reported in northeast Monona County, southeast Woodbury County and southwest Ida County has deepened.

We reported last week that residents heard a loud noise, which police believe was a sonic boom from a passing jet, on Tuesday night.

The problem is, every regional military official we talked to — including one that called this week — says it wasn’t one of their planes.

These hinnies could be yours…if the price is right

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office is hoping area residents need a pair of hinnies.

Despite posting public notices and receiving a slew of media coverage, the office is offering the donkey-horse hybrids up for sale at 10 a.m. Nov. 18.

Holidays are family time

Just in time for the holidays, the Minneapolis-St. Paul media’s been following a crime story that makes a person’s skin crawl.

It centers around the death of Twin Cities resident Edwin Hawes, 46, who press reports say was shot with a crossbow, beaten in the head with a baseball bat, possibly run over by a car and definitely burned.

The suspects? His brother, sister and brother’s girlfriend.

Wow.
