According to court documents, a judge suspended 21-year-old Melissa Meyer’s two 10-year prison sentences after she pleaded guilty to two counts of neglect of a dependent person.

According to court documents, Meyer was charged in April after someone notified authorities Meyer had left her 4-year-old and 20-month-old daughters in her Bluff Street apartment while she walked to a local bar.

Poo-filled letter lands man in steaming pile of trouble

Monday, January 26th, 2009

A Sioux Falls man is in serious hot water after he allegedly sent a letter containing animal feces to the Minnehaha County clerk. (You can read the Associated Press story here.)

There might not be laws against packages of animal poo, but apparently there are federal laws against sending it to someone via the United States Postal Service.

Sending such a package to a public servant or anyone you don’t like is obviously a crude, nasty thing to do.

Baby gets good advice during court visit

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

You’re never too young to get good advice.

Overheard a woman sharing some wise words with a youngster as I was walking into the Woodbury County courthouse this afternoon.

She was admiring and speaking to a baby who was so bundled up due the bitter Iowa weather that all I could see was blankets stuffed into a carrier.

The woman welcomed the baby to the Woodbury County Courthouse, then offered him or her some pretty good advice.

I don’t ever want to see you back in here again until you get married, she said.
