Man to prison for undergarment theft, drunken chase

A Rock Valley man is going to prison for up to 15 years for burglary, drunk driving and leading police on a high-speed chase.

However, what he stole and how he did it are far more interesting than his court sentence.

Who he stole it from is also noteworthy and, if I were her, I’d be very upset.

Relatives provide reporter tip that leads to suspect’s location, arrest

A former South Sioux City woman was arrested this week in connection with the 2006 death of her former foster child, Nathaniel Saunsoci-Mitchell.

The woman, Tisha Vega, had been wanted since July for a charge of manslaughter.

The Journal had been trying to track Vega down for about a month, which is when my editor asked me to do a follow-up story on the investigation into the 20-month-old toddler’s death.

Police: Student’s quick thinking fends off attack

Police say a female University of South Dakota student fought off an attempted sexual assault on March 20 by hitting the attacker in the face with a high heeled shoe.

Vermillion Police Chief Art Mabry believes that the victim, who he said was walking home from a fraternity dance, may have hit the attacker hard enough to leave a noticable mark.

Man robs store and….dies?

Seattle police tracking a robber think they have their man…who is now waiting for his autopsy.

The new seattlepi.com, the online version of what used to be the Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper, has the story.

The Seattle newspaper’s parent company slashed most of its staff and went to an online-only format this week.

Firefighters: Blame the paper shredder

Firefighters say a malfunctioning paper shredder likely sparked the fire that severely damaged a Sioux City home.

Officials think the motor overheated, starting the plastic housing on fire and then spreading to nearby materials.

Luckily, no one was injured.

Texas plane makes sad delivery to Sioux City

Police say an airplane pilot made a sad delivery recently after his passenger died during the flight.

Sioux City Police Sgt. Mike Post said officers were alerted about 1 p.m. Thursday that a private plane would be landing in Sioux City with a deceased passenger.

“Jealous husband” spoils the night

One local man had a rough time this weekend courtesy of someone’s very angry significant other.

Officers were called about 9:45 p.m. Saturday to an apartment on West 19th Street for a person injured and bleeding due to an assault.

Prosecutors: Associates fed Anna Nicole Smith thousands of drugs

More information was released today about what drugs the late Anna Nicole Smith was on, how she got them and who gave them to her.

The Associated Press has an interesting article on the wire today, which tells more about the nuts and bolts of the investigation into her death — it was on Tribal land — and information on the massive quantity of pills she had access to.
