Pool temp sends guest into tizzy

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Police were called to a Sioux City hotel recently because a guest was causing a ruckus over the unacceptably low temperature of the hotel’s pool.

Sioux City Police Sgt. Mike Post said the dispute started when a guest of the Baymont Inn & Suites did not get the refund they thought they deserved.

Wind gust blasts pet Chihuahua into orbit

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Here in the Siouxland, we know wind.

It causes tornados, damage from straight-line winds and sometimes blows semi tractor-trailer rigs over while they’re rolling down the highway.

But have you ever heard of a random gust of wind strong enough to blow away a family pet?

That’s what people say happened in suburban Detroit, Mich., where an elderly woman was heartbroken after her tiny Chihuahua, Tinker Bell, was blown away on Saturday.

His golden mane gave him away

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

If only he hadn’t had such memorable hair.

The police log contains quite a bit of criminal mischief, a charge that covers property damage such as graffiti and vandalism, but it seems like few suspects get caught in the act.

Especially not by a police sergeant.

However, court documents allege Zachary Bainbridge, 17, of Merrill, Iowa, is an unlucky kid with an eye-catching head of hair.

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s office is investigating a disturbing animal cruelty case involving dead sheep.

According to a statement, several lambs were found shot to death near the northern Iowa city of West Bend.

It was an interesting week, crime-wise, for that neck of the woods. Which is odd, because things are usually pretty quiet up there.

Police chase leads to bathroom

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

A Sioux City teen suspected of dealing methamphetamine took off from police, court documents state, leading officers on a chase that ended in the bathroom.

According to court documents, Christopher Ristau, 18, attracted the attention of police on March 25 when his vehicle drifted across the center line — in front of a police car — on the 3100 block of Correctionville Road.

That sobriety test would’ve been a lot easier if…

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

A Sioux City man charged with drunk driving had an unsual — and painful — excuse for not completing field sobriety tests.

According to court documents, Alfred James Nelson, 24, was intoxicated when he tried to flee police in his 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee at 1:13 a.m. on April 6.

Impressive smoke plume lures reporters from afar

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Firefighters are still investigating the cause of a silo fire that created an impressive smoke plume late Thursday afternoon.

Thick black smoke billowed from the top of the silo, said Journal reporter Michele Linck, (and the smoke was) easily visible from five miles away.

Linck, who was on her way home from work, stopped to take several pictures of the fire.

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

The sword fight that killed an Indianapolis grandmother trying to intervene has claimed a second victim.

The Indianapolis Star says court documents claim Christopher Rondeau and his uncle drank beer, and the uncle allegedly drank other alcoholic beverages, before they began fighting with a Japanese-style sword and Samurai sword.

Plight of the toasted river pilings

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

In an earlier blog post, I mentioned that firefighters were unsure what federal officials would do about a mile of river pilings scorched during a recent grass fire.

The damaged pilings, on the south side of the Missouri River in Dakota County, Neb., had the potential turn what seemed like a small grassfire into an extremely costly ordeal.

Considering how hard it was for firefighters to get down there to fight the fire, getting heavy equipment in there to replace them would not be a fun time.
