There’s a fire on Fourth Street…or is there?

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Two recent high-profile fires in Sioux City have those of us who listen to police scanners for a living a little more on edge.

Officials stopped short of calling the fires arson (called them “suspicious”), but we in the media are playing close attention anyway.
Let’s just say the words “possible structure fire” really grab our attention these days.

Police log: Some jailbirds fly right to police

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Flashing red and blue lights inspire some suspects to rev the engine, mash the accelerator to the floor and speed away until they crash or drive across a set of stop sticks.

Much like Pablo Elias-Lopez is accused of doing on June 19.

(P.S. I knew that name was familiar)

This is not one of those suspects. (more…)

Welcome to the Crime Blog’s first-ever Drug Case Appreciation Week.

Several people have been arrested and charged with interesting drug-related offenses so I’m going to feature them the rest of the week.

Most aren’t interesting due to the amount of drugs seized, although today’s case includes a hefty load of marijuana, but because of what people allegedly say and do when they are arrested.

Today’s case made the blog not only for what a suspect is accused of saying, but also because it was allegedly said to a child protective services worker.

In the midst of pain, family shares memories of a lost daughter

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Less than two weeks since 3-year-old Evelyn Verdugo Paniagua was killed, there’s already a folder stuffed with court documents from State of Nebraska v. Melecio Camacho-De Jesus sitting on my desk.

The first page, however, isn’t about Camacho-De Jesus – the man arrested for allegedly raping and killing the South Sioux City toddler.

It’s a pamphlet from Evelyn’s public memorial held last week in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.

Grave-robbing squirrels have eyes on Old Glory

Monday, June 1st, 2009

For years, volunteers have placed approximately 3,000 American flags at the graves of veterans in Mount Hope, Port Huron Allied Veterans and Lakeside cemeteries in Port Huron, Mich.

For the first time anyone can remember (and I once talked to a woman who’d been placing flags for 75 years), someone — or something — was stealing those flags from graves in a section of the Mount Hope Cemetery.

Ruthlessly ripping them right off the pole.
