TEA Parties more than tax beefs

Tomorrow a few thousand Taxed Enough Already events will be held nationally on the day federal income tax returns must be filed. There’s always grousing as April 15 nears each year, but in 2009 with a new president and Democratically controlled Congress in place, the rhetoric is higher than typical. And so the TEA parties are being held.

Interviewing Woodbury County Republican Party Chairman Brian Rosener about the TEA Party here, he spoke a smidge about taxes and then referenced conservative principles being under assault on issues like marriage and abortion. Wait, I asked, tell me more about taxes, and Rosener gave a few examples, but said the TEA parties are much broader than that. The “burden of tax-and-spend” is present, he said, but also “we are being taxed morally. Here in Iowa, we are being forced to accept same-sex marriage.”

Said Rosener, “We are all being attacked — no matter what conservative value we are trying to stand on, the current administration is trying to jerk it out from underneath us.” Rosener, who lives in Bronson, said the parties will be attended by “conservatives tired of their conservative views being attacked and taxed.”

He said some people will also want to talk about stemming illegal immigration in the TEA parties. That’s apt, the Americans for Illegal Immigration Political Action Committee is backing participation in the events. Here are some of the signs ALIPAC suggests participants display: “No Taxation For Illegal Immigration,” “Illegal Aliens Steal Our Tax Resources,” “Secure Our Border, Secure Our Taxes” and “Amnesty Equals Higher Taxes.”

Likewise, there are some suggestions for locals attending the Sioux City TEA Party at noon tomorrow at the Anderson Dance Pavilion. The Woodbury County Republican Party Web site suggests signs for adults like “No More Bailouts,” and for kids who want to get in the game, “Stop Spending My Money” and “My Allowance Gone Forever?” are among the sign wording proposals.
