Guess who’s got the scoop on the acts coming to SITP’s Second Stage this year?

Yea that’s right…it’s me. If you like Hip-Hop, Soul, Punk, Rock, Polka (just kidding- maybe), or just one giant party…you’ll want to stay tuned for the official announcements.

But, you can’t wait ’til then, can you? I know you wanna know what bands are coming to bring the Funk this 4th of July, right? So, hit me up and I’ll clue you in…maybe.

I attended the performance of Sleeping Beauty this afternoon.  It was a fantastic performance by the local ballet company, one I would have enjoyed a bit more if I had not been busy being ashamed to be a Sioux City Resident.  Theatre etiquette or just etiquette was missing today.  Miss Manners would have been ashamed!

-Just because it is named Sleeping Beauty and Disney has taken the tale and made her into one of the Disney Princesses does not mean that one should bring their toddlers to the performance without first doing some research!  I am all for sharing the performing arts with the little ones; I had a six year old with me.  But that six year old did not talk through the whole performance.  Not in a whisper voice either, a full blown conversation with people several seats down; throughout the entire two and half hour performance.  And that was just the adults!!  Due to poor parenting, the youngsters were also talking, loudly; but then one can’t expect the apple to be able to fall to far from the tree.  I realize that not every young child and adult where displaying such terrible manners, but the general hum throughout the Orpheum along with the very annoying group behind me was enough to ruin the afternoon.

-Next time, please attempt to arrive on time.  Even though the performance began late, you still proceeded to pour in after the lights had been lowered.

-I appreciated the touch of having a narrator share the story with us before every act; but when people proceed to talk through his part and then ask each other 20 questions about the story line during the dancing, the effort of the narrator is lost.

-One does not have to be cultural educated to know better than to answer your cell phone in the middle of a ballet.  Oh yes, it happened, more than once!

-You do not have to enjoy the performance, but PLEASE wait to share your demeaning, sexist, racist comments till you get in your car.

-Your child asked to leave at least 15 times; I sure wish you would have listened to them the first time.  Instead, you chose to leave with approximately 10 minutes left in the performance.  I was excited that you were leaving, that was until you proceeded to leave VERY loudly.

To the performers involved in today’s production, great work!  It was beautiful to watch, it is just unfortunate your hard work had to be ruined by some adults.

Everyone Loves College

Friday, March 27th, 2009

After Jesse Claeys introduced you to the 21 year old rapper last month, Asher Roth’s first single “I Love College” has been absolutely everywhere. I figured it would spawn dozens of remixes and I was right. After scouring YouTube, this song has more spoofs, parodies, covers, and remakes than the Lil’ Wayne “A Milli” phenomenon.
(WARNING- Some of these videos contain some off-color content…so viewer discretion is advised.)

Here’s the original:

The ‘90s on my Mind…Tootsie Rolls part II

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

The love affair down memory lane with Tootsie Rolls continues. This time I pose a timeless question: “How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?”

The 1970’s ad campaign said “The world may never know”, but research by major universities have given us figures between 200 and 400 licks by a human tongue before we can get to the chocolaty center unde the hard candy shell. So that seemingly age-old mystery might be solved, but thinking deeper about Tootsie Pops, other questions sure come to mind…

-Why were those kids asking an owl and a turtle in the commercial? The ‘70’s sure musta been trippy.

-With Cherry, Orange, Chocolate, Grape, and Raspberry (plus several new additions to the flavor family), who didn’t have a favorite? But why did anyone like Chocolate? I mean, what was on the inside– more chocolate…it’s like anti-climatic to get the center of those, right?

-Speaking of the flavors, who’s idea was it to put Grape in a blue wrapper? What threw me off for years, thinking the color blue tasted like that.

-And finally, who else ever put their ‘winning’ wrapper in the mailbox hoping for a free Tootsie Pop when it contained the illustrious Indian Star? Did you ever get anything?

So, boys and girls, the only lesson to be learned from these posts: Stay candied up.

PeAcE,
DeRoin.

Let’s Bailout Capitalism

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Disclaimer: I don’t know and don’t particularly care how the Stock Market works. I have no idea what AIG actually even does as far as selling goods or services. I registered as a Democrat just so I could go to the caucus. I speak for the uninformed and highly apathetic general public of 8-5 suckers.

Free enterprise is sure costing us…

Bailing out ‘loser’ companies like AIG (American International Group) and General Motors totally goes against the grain of capitalism. The US government has always strung us along and lead us to believe that this nation is the land of the free. Well, Uncle Sam and his goons and cronies are always kickin’ down our doors taking what they want and dishing out what they feel is just. Hardly ‘Laissez-faire’ at all, huh?!? Unless we tie up the government’s interests with corporate bologna, lobbying, and other under the table dirty dealings, we have no say.

Sure, anti-monopoly laws (Microsoft, AT&T, Standard Oil) kinda made sense in a Robin Hood kind of way, but now taking our money and giving a handout to failed ventures like AIG is crossing the line of free enterprise. These companies have outlived their shelf life and deserve to die if capitalism still has any legs left in America. Remember Gateway Computers or that Denver newspaper?!? Yea, me neither…they went out of business and the government wasn’t supplying them funds to waste on giving ‘incentive’ bonuses to people that obviously did a bad job somewhere along the line.

Okay, okay…people are losing jobs and we don’t want that. But giving the empty suit, big wig, windbag the money? Keeping these companies afloat might help the Dow Jones for one day, but it won’t trickle down as long as there are private jets to buy. If the government wants to help out the average citizen who doesn’t have millions of dollars in assets and billions in liabilities in his or her ledger, why not spend the money on universal healthcare for the PEOPLE and quit bailing out doomed companies that deserve the wrath of capitalism??

But, until the government and these big companies get out of bed with each other, nothing will ever change for us- the people…except more of us searching the job classifieds.

Wall Street will forever trump Main Street…but you know what they say: “Cash Rules Everything Around Me.”
And you know who has the money…not us.

Basketball Jones

Monday, March 16th, 2009

If you haven’t heard…

The most wonderful weekend of the year starts on Thursday (or Tuesday if you’re a fan of Alabama State or Morehead State). 32 games in four days, oh yes, March Madness is here!

Workrates will plummet, but office gambling will spike. Most will jump in a pool and attempt to convince you they know the difference between RPIs and RBIs. Every Cinderella fan is looking for the next George Mason and every bandwagoner is jumping to support a #1 seed. Everyone will be carrying around their sacred bracket with several highlighters cursing the mid-major that killed their final four matchups by Friday afternoon. No-nothing ‘fans’ will debate who will win based on team colors and mascots. Joe Alum will complain that East Tech State got snubbed again in favor of Arizona. And we’ll all be sick and tired of Clark Kellogg and Seth Davis arguing by the weekend…but who doesn’t love the NCAA Basketball Tournament?!?

Who’s your favorite in the field of 65? I’ll reveal my Final Four on Thursday. Stay tuned.

I already have brackets on Facebook, Yahoo Sports, Kool 99.5, Sioux City Journal, and a pool at work…but am always looking for more to enter.

PeAcE,
DeRoin.
