November 23rd, 2009 - Downtown for the Holidays (11-23)

The City of Sioux City and Downtown Sioux City kick off the holiday season in style with an evening full of activities for the entire family.

The “Holiday Lighted Parade” will begin at 6:15 p.m and wind its way along 4^th Street in lighted splendor ending at the Roth Fountain. The sounds of Christmas will fill the Promenade with music from the North Star Chorale beginning at 6pm. Immediately following the parade around the Roth Fountain is “Santa’s Welcome” with special guest, Santa! Welcoming Santa will be 3^rd Graders from Clark Elementary School, Master of Ceremonies, Dave Madsen and Honorary Master of Ceremonies, Clarence Carney. With the help of all, Santa will light up the sky as the colors of the season explode with the “Holiday Fireworks”, opening the holiday season in downtown. Following the holiday kickoff, Santa will be escorted to Santa's House in Town Square at 4^th & Pierce Streets where children of Siouxland can present him with their wish lists. And don't forget to stop by the Terra Centre for the opening night of the Festival of Trees that begins at 6:30 p.m.

November 23rd, 2009 - m.i.l.k. (Managing Information on Lost Kids) event (11-23)

Farmers Insurance District Office will host a m.i.l.k. event at their office in conjuction with the Christmas Festivities.

To aid in the recovery of missing children, the m.i.l.k. (Managing Information on Lost Kids) Digital ID was designed to provide parents and caregivers a convenient location to store a digital photo and identification information regarding their children.

The m.i.l.k. Digital ID is a component of the Home Organizer® software program. This vital data is then stored in the privacy of the user’s computer. Should a person become lost or missing, with just a click, their m.i.l.k. Digital ID can be printed or sent via email to the proper authorities and forwarded to NCMEC.

If the proper criteria is met, the local authorities will initiate an Amber Alert. In the event of a national search, this photo and identification information can then be broadcast to over 17,600 police departments and the vast database of NCMEC Poster Partner Program members

November 23rd, 2009 - Skateboard Clinic (11-23)

The Sioux City Skateboard Association in conjunction with Sioux City Parks and Rec. is hosting a skateboard clinic for area youth and parents to come and learn the fundamentals of skateboarding and or improve their current skill of the sport. This clinic will also act as an alliance of skaters that will essentially be the life blood of Sioux City to protect their skatepark which is Cook Street Skatepark. Free.

Under 18 need parent present to sign waiver. Helmets Required (Rentals Available for $5). No Skateboarding outside of clinic area.

The clinic will consist of 2 categories - Beginner and Intermediate. There will be instructors on hand to teach beginner and intermediate skateboarders the fundamentals and techniques to improve their current skateboarding abilities. We encourage parents to join in and oer assistance in this program if they wish. We hope to make this a successful clinic and look forward to more clinics to oer a safe place for the youth of Siouxland to expand their skills during the winter months.

A 1777 printing of the Declaration of Independence and an early copy of the Magna Carta are among about 50 rare books, manuscripts, documents and pamphlets featured in the world-class collection, which is on loan to the Freedom Forum and University Libraries from The Remnant Trust of Louisville, Ky. Other significant pieces of the collection include first- and early-edition works such as Mary Shelly’s “Frankenstein,” Karl Marx’s “Communist Manifesto,” the Federalist Papers, George Orwell’s “1984,” and books by John Adams and John Locke.

November 23rd, 2009 - Omaha Public Schools 150th Anniversary Exhibit

In honor of Omaha Public Schools’ 150^th Anniversary, an exhibit at the Durham Museum will take visitors on a journey back to the 1860s to learn what school was like for students and teachers when Omaha was a newly-found frontier town. Visitors will be able to follow an interactive timeline through the district’s interesting and rich history showcasing rare photos and one-of-a-kind artifacts. Durham hours are Sunday, 1 – 5 pm; Tuesday, 10 am – 8 pm: Wednesday - Saturday, 10 am - 5 pm.

Opening reception Saturday, Jan. 12 5-7 p.m. Minnesota-based artist Liz Miller has installed her three-story, site-specific installation in the T. S. Martin Atrium at the Sioux City Art Center. This special installation, Resplendent Reconnaissance, will hang from the ceiling of the three-story Atrium for up to two years. Art Center hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tues., Wed., Fri & Sat.; 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Thurs., 1-5 p.m. Sun. Closed Monday.
