Comics store again claims worldwide recognition
Posted: Sunday, August 17, 2003
For the second years in a row, ACME Comics and Collectibles in Sioux City was named the second place finalist in the 2003 Will Eisner "Spirit of Comics" retailer competition. The award is named after Eisner, creator of the comic book "The Spirit."
The award was presented last month at an award ceremony at the Sand Diego Comic-con.
ACME was one of 12 nominees worldwide for the Eisner award. The only honor given to comic book retailers, it's considered to be the "comic book store of the year" in the industry.
As in last year's competition, judging was based on four criteria including community activity, supporting a wide variety of innovative material, knowledge and quality of store image. Last year, ACME missed first place by seven points out of a possible 600. This year ACME owners' Fran and Kevin McGarry were informed by the judges that the competition was even closer.
Fran McGarry says the best part was being congratulated by Will Eisner himself. "Eisner came over to us after viewing our submission video and said that we should be very proud of our store," she said. "The one that we have over mass market bookstores is a love of the stories that we sell and the expert staff to help customers."
ACME Comics and Collectibles,1622 Pierce St., was established in 1995.
The comic book, game and collectible specialty store quickly rose to be one of the leaders in the industry.
