Rock Valley water project a success

Posted: Monday, November 10, 2003
ROCK VALLEY, Iowa (AP) -- A community project helped reduce the level of nitrates in the water of this northwest Iowa town by half, agriculture officials said.

The Rock Valley Water Protection Project involved local residents, high school students and state and federal agencies.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Patty Judge praised the cooperative effort.

"This initiative shows what can be accomplished when we all work together to better our environment," she said.

Throughout the project, the students monitored the level of nitrates and participated in a crop rotation project that didn't use fertilizers such as livestock manure, which can contribute to nitrate problems.

Meetings also were held with farmers to discuss manure management rules and new methods that can cut the level of nitrates flowing into nearby waters.
