North Sioux City will start collecting its new bed, booze, ticket and prepared food tax on Friday.
The tax will add 1 percent to the price of alcoholic beverages, admission tickets, prepared foods and lodging.
Based on 2003 figures, state and city projections both show the tax will add about $105,000 to city coffers each year. State statute governs how the city can spend the money.
According to city Finance Officer Brad Keith, North Sioux City can use the money only for the following: land acquisition; architectural fees; construction costs; payments for a civic center, auditoriums or athletic facilities buildings and their maintenance, staffing and operations; and for the promotion and advertising of the city, its facilities and activities.
The lodging tax will apply to places where a person stays fewer than 28 days, such as a hotel or motel, but not to longer-term, leased housing.
The tax on alcoholic beverages will apply both to liquor by the drink and packaged liquor.
The "ticket" tax will apply to admission to places of amusement, athletic or cultural events.
The tax on prepared food will apply both to dine-in or carry-out foods.
The new tax was approved by the City Council in October. It goes into effect July 1 along with municipal sales tax hikes approved by 15 other South Dakota cities.
In this area, Tabor, S.D., will increase its general sales and use tax from 1 to 2 percent. Wagner, S.D. will hike its general sales and use tax from 1.82 percent to 2 percent.
