Mercy Medical Center is accepting applications from bilingual high school students interested in becoming certified nursing assistants. The deadline is July 11.
"With the increasing Latino population in the community, more help is needed to provide culturally sensitive and competent health care," said Jim Rouse, executive director of community health partnership at Mercy.
The scholarships are available through the Healthcare Opportunities for Latino Advancement (HOLA) program. HOLA is designed to improve the quality of nursing care for the Hispanic population in Siouxland and increase the bilingual Hispanic nursing workforce. The program has been funded by Mercy since 2004.
The funding covers the cost of candidate assessment, medical terminology courses in English/Spanish, nursing assistant courses, stethoscopes, uniforms, competency exams, tutoring, childcare and transportation.
Rouse said 10 students have participated in the program and two more candidates will be selected this year.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and a high school graduate or have their GED. Official school transcripts must also be provided. The applicants must be bilingual in English/Spanish. Applications must also include three letters of reference.
After students have been accepted into the program, they will enroll in Western Iowa Tech Community College for a six-week courses in nurse's aide theory and nurse's aide clinical, which includes the Iowa-licensing exam.
HOLA program will pay textbooks, tuition, course fees and tutoring. At the end of the program, they can apply for a certified nursing assistant position at Mercy.
"Two of our first students are working in the hospital right now," said Rouse.
HOLA applications are available at Mercy's Human Resources Department or by calling (712) 279-2773 or online at: www.mercysiouxcity.com
