Yankton prepares for archery tournament

Posted: Tuesday, July 12, 2005
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The Lewis and Clark Recreation Area along the banks of the Missouri River is preparing to host a national archery tournament later this month.

The National Field Archery Association's 60th annual National Outdoor Archery Championship will be held July 25-29 in the Gavin's section of the recreation area.

The event is expected to attract 750 to 1,000 shooters and many spectators. Park officials have built five archery ranges and landscaped existing ones to prepare.

"There are 28 target ranges. They are pretty much ready to go," said District Parks Supervisor Shane Bertsch, who added that only a small amount of work remains.

Access to some areas of the park will be limited because of the number of shooters and spectators, Bertsch said. Visitors will not be able to use the nature trail, horse trail, disc golf course and boat ramp in the Gavin's Section.

Scott Aase of Dakota Archery in Yankton, the primary sponsor and organizer of the event, said preparations are going well.

"We've got people working on the course trying to make it very challenging," he said. "(Archery) is similar to golf in a way: you can make the course as flat and easy as you want or you can make them challenging. This is going to be a very challenging course."

Aase said he hopes the preparation, planning and execution will bring archers and tournaments back for years.

"What we're hoping to do is to make such a good impression on all the participants coming to South Dakota that we get to use these trails over and over," he said. "I think we're going to do get that job done because we are really doing it up right.
