Regatta, rods, 'Vettes in the Park this weekend

By Russ Oechslin Journal correspondent | Posted: Friday, August 12, 2005
ARNOLDS PARK, Iowa -- In addition to the nighttime fun on Campus this week two major car shows will highlight daytime activities this weekend.

The Old Iron Company will be displaying member-owned vehicles along Lakeside Drive in the Arnolds Park Amusement Park Saturday. And University of Okoboji Corvette Club members will be showing off their vintage wheels Sunday afternoon.

Much like the wooden boat show a few weeks back, this event draws thousands to the Park -- with many more kids interested in the cars than in antique boats.

Older "kids" will appreciate the Inland Lakes Yachting Association's championship regatta, which starts Sunday and sails through next Saturday on the waters of West Lake Okoboji.

This is the first year the ILYA -- the biggest sailing races of the year -- have been held here since 1999. Five classes of sailboats will be participating in up to three races each day, weather permitting.

Organizers urge spectators in powerboats to reduce speed in the race areas, as wakes generated by powerboats can upset sailboats.

After a most successful three-night stint at The Inn, Marilyn Maye is getting ready for a more formal one-night stand at the Lakes Art Center's Lauridsen Theatre stage, Saturday night, August 27.

Much like The Inn, where she had three sold-out nights, advance tickets sales are heavy.

But unlike her "a-Maye-zing" Ray Charles tribute at The Inn, the LAC show will be a tribute to the Tonight Show's Johnny Carson, for whom Maye guested 75 times -- more than any other singer.

It was Carson who dubbed Maye a "Super Singer." And it is that title she has used for her Carson tribute CD.

The LAC box office may still have some good seats available at 712-332-7029.

While Billie James no longer holds court at the Blue Water Cabaret, fans can catch her act at the Little Swan Lake Winery, just north of Superior, every Thursday evening. Sioux Citian Justin Kisor should also be with the Awesome Aussie.

A sure sign that summer is drawing to a close, the season finale for the Okoboji Summer Theatre, Meredith Willson's "Music Man," opens Tuesday night.

The OST ticket box office phone is 712-332-7773.

Mezzo-soprano Emily Lodine will be singing at the Lakes Art Center tomorrow night accompanied by Karen Carr. The concert will feature light operetta classics and the music of composers such as George Gershwin and Cole Porter.

Marie Heath will be leading her sing-a-long in the Yankee Clipper Lounge at The Inn, tonight and tomorrow night. And the Dick Bauman (Monday Night) Big Band will perform in The Inn's Lakeview Ballroom, Monday night.

Loose Cannon opens the weekend at The Ritz, in Arnolds Park, tonight, with Sober Tuesday on the deck tomorrow night, when Loose Cannon will be inside.

At the Okoboji Boat Works, Too Drunk to Fish will play tonight. And A.C.E. will perform beginning at 6 p.m., tomorrow. Big Scott Allen steps in Sunday at 4 p.m.

A.C.E. is at the Parks Marina Barefoot Bar tonight, with The Lovehandles "on stage" tomorrow.

Captain's Getaway will feature the Rave On! Rock show from Omaha tonight and tomorrow.

And Monkey's Uncle can be seen and heard at Whiskey Dick's tonight and tomorrow night as well.

Comedy fans will delight to comic ventriloquist James Wedgwood Saturday night only at the Blue Water Cabaret, while Steven Hirst will travel from Fort Worth, Texas to entertain at the Funny Barn in Spirit Lake both tonight and tomorrow night.
