West High announces homecoming plans

West High School will celebrate homecoming this week.
Activities will include spirit days, a powderpuff football game, a volleyball game, a car bash, coronation ceremonies, dessert reception, parade, football game and homecoming dance.
Spirit days will be Monday, Pajama/Super Hero Day; Tuesday, Twin/Hillbilly Day; Wednesday, Wacky WednesDay; Thursday, Class Color Day; and Friday, Green and White Day.
The powderpuff game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Riverside football field.
An homecoming assembly will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. A varsity volleyball match will start at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Right after that match, the West High band will sponsor a "Whack the Van" event in the West High parking lot. Then the volleyball team will play another match at 8 p.m.
The homecoming king and queen will be crowned during coronation ceremonies at 7 p.m. Thursday in the West High auditorium. The mistress and master of ceremonies will be Molly Rice, daughter of Ranae and Gary Rice, and Carlos Hansen, son of Cheryl and Rich Hansen. Trenton Lee and Veronica Cruz, the 2004 homecoming king and queen, will crown this year's king and queen.
The West High orchestra under the direction of Kristin Zwart will perform coronation music. The group Foray will sing "Diary," directed by Jean Busker, choir director, and will feature soloist Brandon Hopkins. Crown bearers will be Selena Cruz, daughter of Mario and Shannon Cruz, and Jack Swanson, son of John and Katie Swanson. Senior escorts will be Clara Gandarilla, daughter of Kathy Varela and Julian Gandarilla, and Cory Paronto, son of Yvonne and David Paronto.
Following the coronation, the West High Booster Club will sponsor a free dessert reception at 7:30 p.m. in the West High media center. The West High Booster Club will sponsor the reception.
The homecoming parade will get under way at 1:30 p.m. Friday at 14th and Pierce streets and proceed down Pierce Street ending at the Tyson Events Center. Margaret Trysla, retired West High English teacher, will be the grand marshal. The parade will feature the homecoming royalty, class floats, West High band, West High drill team, West Middle band, feeder school participants, North, East and Heelan High royalty and other school and community organizations.
The West High Wolverines will meet the Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln Lynx in the homecoming football game at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Elwood Olsen Stadium. The homecoming royalty will be introduced and the West High Band directed by Keith Weigandt and assistant Julie Weigandt will perform at half time.
The homecoming dance, beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Sioux City Convention Center, will conclude homecoming activities. The theme will be "Arabian Nights."
Throughout the week, the Student Council will be collecting money for Bart Tucker, West High alumnus who lost both arms at the elbows while fighting in Iraq. He is married and the father of a daughter.
Candidates for homecoming queen are Kassie Carlson, daughter of Mike and Barb Carlson; Tierra Hodges, daughter of Shirley Hodges; Annika Kolbo, daughter of John and Suzanne Kolbo; Tiffaney Miller, daughter of Twila Miller; Danielle Pecaut, daughter of Dan and Kay Pecaut; Liz Pyburn, daughter of Rick and Sue Pyburn; Callie Roan, daughter of Gary and Roxanne Roan, and Carrie Van Wyk, daughter of Curt Van Wyk and Julie and Tony Albright.
Candidates for homecoming king are Huy Cao, son of Toan Cao and Thao Bui; Mario Cruz Jr., son of Mario and Shannon Cruz; Adam Girard, son of Marcus and Mary Girard; Jesse Hinrichs, son of Linc and Sue Hinrichs; Shane Lesko, son of Shannon and Julie Lesko; Matt Murray, son of Gerry and Connie Murray; Enrique Porras, son of David and Edith Porras, and Tanner Seibold, son of Tammi Askelson and Scott March.
