IGCA hosts all-star basketball games

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Iowa Girls Coaches Association (IGCA) will host its 15th Gatorade All-Star games at Mount Mercy College here this weekend.

Approximately 120 seniors will display their talents on the floor, while the IGCA will also honor outstanding coaches, referees and administrators. The honors banquet will be held at the Clarion Hotel at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

The first all-star game will pit the Class 3A White team against the 3A Gray team at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The 3A Select team plays the 4A Select team, at 2:15, while the 4A White team meets the 4A Gray team at 4 p.m. On Sunday, the Class 1A White meets the 1A Gray at 1 p.m., while the 1A and 2A Select squads play at 2:15 and the 2A White and Gray squads hook up at 4:30.

Charter Oak-Ute's Kala Kuhlmann, a University of Nebraska recruit who averaged 22.5 points per game this season, is a member of the Class 1A Select team. The roster also includes Rock Valley's Shayla Lange, who averaged 16.8 points, and Jessica Christians of George-Little Rock, who averaged 13 an outing.

Morningside College recruit Brittany Williamson, who scored an even 19 points an outing, will play for the Class 2A Select team. The Class 3A Select roster includes Nicole Clausen and Lindsey Swanson of Denison, who will both play at the University of Northern Iowa, along with Cherokee's Kayla Henke. Clausen averaged 22 points, Swanson 18 and Henke 18.7 per game.

Cat Nelson of Sioux City North (12.1 ppg.) and Kelsey Johnikin of Sioux City West (11 ppg.) are on the Class 4A Select team. Nelson led North to a state tournament berth this season.

The Class 1A White roster lists Kristin Bumsted of Charter Oak-Ute, Dani Olerich of Odebolt-Arthur and Megan Homan of Remsen St. Mary's. Emily Schlinz of Galva-Holstein and Samantha Schaffer of Newell-Fonda are on the Class 1A Gray roster.

Randa Hulstein of Sioux Center will compete for the Class 2A White team. Spencer's Megan Brandt and Spirit Lake's Katie Brown are on the Class 3A Gray roster, along with Katie Sponder of Le Mars, who is injured.

Connie Walding of Sioux City North will play for the Class 4A White team.

Todd Tigren of MOC-Floyd Valley will coach the Class 3A Gray team.

The 2006 Coaches Hall of Fame inductees include former longtime Hinton Coach Garie Rusk and Bill Lombard of West Lyon. Steve Jansen and Rich Larson of Sioux City, along with Marlo Van Ginkle of Rock Valley and Terry McMillen of Orange City, will be inducted into the Referees Hall of Fame.
