Drug dogs sniff through school parking lot

Posted: Saturday, April 29, 2006
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- The police dogs were sniffing for drugs in a Lincoln high school parking lot, sending a message that drugs and alcohol have no place in school.

"Along with the messages we've already been sending ... this would be another avenue to strengthen that message," said Becky Wild, Lincoln Public Schools director of student services.

On Thursday, the Lincoln Police Department dogs scoured the parking lot at Lincoln North Star High School .

If a dog got a "hit" on a car, another was brought in. Two hits on the same car meant that school officials contacted the student.

Police Chief Tom Casady said the results were encouraging: Seven cars were searched, resulting in one ticket for a marijuana pipe.

Police will search other parking lots, Wild said.

It's legal for police to use dogs in public places, especially with permission from school officials, Casady said. To search a vehicle, though, officers must get permission from the owner or have cause to get a search warrant.

Casady said searches are a good deterrent.

"No doubt anyone who has been bringing drugs to school in their car or on their person would be having second thoughts if they knew this potential exists, and I think that's a very good thing," Casady said.
