Man released from treatment 6 days before slayings

Posted: Friday, May 05, 2006
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- The man charged in the slayings of two college students was released from treatment six days before the attacks, court records show.

Kyle Marin, 19, of North Liberty, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the stabbing deaths of Katrina Hill, 18, of Solon, and Molly Edmondson, 18, of Cedar Rapids. The women, both students at Kirkwood Community College, were cousins. Their bodies were discovered by Hill's father on April 23 after Hill failed to show up for a family event.

Marin turned himself in to police later and is being held on $1 million bond.

Court records show that Marin was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids by his mother after he tried to commit suicide on April 4. He remained at the hospital until April 17, records show.

The new information was included in a motion to revoke Marin's probation from a 2004 willful injury. The charge was the result of an assault in which Marin hit a man with a brick.

A hearing on the motion to revoke Marin's probation is scheduled for next week.

The documents don't indicate why Marin was released from the hospital. They do include a recommendation that Marin attend programming at University Hospitals and receive other mental health counseling as part of his treatment.

Marin removed a monitoring bracelet the day before he attempted suicide, records show.

On Wednesday, Marin's attorneys asked a judge to seal other records that detail Marin's past. They were successful earlier in the week in getting an order barring the release of a tape of the 911 call made by Hill's father after he discovered the bodies.
