Posted: Monday, August 14, 2006
Area residents, businesses and organizations are invited to join America’s Walk for Diabetes at 2 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Anderson Dance Pavilion on the Sioux City riverfront to raise funds for the American Diabetes Association.

The walk will begin at the pavilion and wind along the riverfront for nearly two miles. There also will be hot dogs, ice cream treats, carnival games, Dizzy the clown, face painting, entertainment, cheerleaders, dancers, educational booths, free T-shirts and vendors.

Persons are encouraged to walk as individuals or join teams from their workplace, school, family service organization or friends. Dennis Bullock, manager of Powell Broadcasting, will serve as the honorary corporate chair of the walk. Ken Todd, local chiropractor and member of the Cosmopolitan Club, chairs the walk committee of more than a dozen people.

A special feature this year will be a "promote your team" contest with two categories. Prizes will be awarded the day of the walk. The most creative team may wear party hats, bandanas, T-shirts, striped socks or anything else that can help their team stand out and add fun color to the outdoor event. The award for best dressed will recognize the team with the most identifiable name.

Proceeds from the walk will support the American Diabetes Association which works to prevent and cure type 1 and type 2 diabetes and improve the lives of both children and adults with diabetes. America’s Walk for Diabetes began in 1991 and this year will take place in some 300 locations nationwide with 200,000 persons.

"We’re excited to have walking teams from our area and nearby communities who have a track record of walking for the cause of diabetes," said Todd. "Walk events help us raise funds and awareness of how exercise and a healthy diet contribute to the prevention and management of diabetes and other life-threatening diseases. We welcome everyone who supports better health for children with diabetes and the growing number of adults with diabetes in our country."

Persons can register for the walk through their workplace or at {M3www.walk.diabetes.org. For more information, call Grace Kavanaugh, ADA Tri-state Leadership Council chair, at (712) 279-3124.
