Fund-raiser to benefit MS
By Joanne Fox, Journal staff writer | Posted: Monday, September 11, 2006
A group of health care professionals will be rocking and rolling this weekend to raise money for MS research.
Dr. Dendrite and the Twisted Synapses are part of a benefit performance Sept. 16 at the Marina Inn Convention Center, South Sioux City.
"This project was something that our neurologists at CNOS wanted to do to give even more to our MS patients," explained Janet Limoges, a registered nurse at CNOS who is assisting with the fund-raiser.
Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 per person. Raffle prizes and t-shirt for sale will be available the evening of the event.
"We will also have a motivational speaker, Vita Coffey from Omaha, who suffers from multiple sclerosis," Limoges said.
The band will begin playing at 8:30 p.m. All proceeds raised will go to MS chapters in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota and into an MS foundation, recently established by CNOS.
"We are hoping to be able to supply some much needed funds for education on MS," Limoges added.
In addition to Dr. Jim Case, a neurologist at CNOS, the Center for Neurosciences Orthopaedics & Spine PC, in Dakota Dunes, other members of the group include CNOS neurosurgeons Drs. Quentin Durward and Ralph Reeder; CNOS orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Tom Chopp; ear, nose and throat specialist, Dr. Tom Kenny; Michelle Gielski, a physician assistant, Kelli Fernando and Tim Cowles.
Case and Cowles play the guitar. Reeder is another guitar player and vocalist. Durward plays the bass. Chopp is on the keyboard. Kenny is on the drums. Fernando and Gielski are the female vocalists.
The group concentrates on classic rock 'n' roll and features the tunes of the Eagles, Bachman Turner Overdrive, and Eric Clapton -- "very danceable music," according to Case -- and only performs for charitable events.
The Dr. Dendrites grew out of Case and Reeder jamming and picking out tunes about 15 years ago. They formally organized the group about nine years ago, adding new rockers along the way.
