LE MARS, Iowa - This time, there was no denying Chris Campbell the end zone.
The 5-10, 173-pound senior halfback scored three of his four touchdowns in the second half as fifth-ranked Le Mars finished its Class 3A
District 1 opener with a 31-7 rout of No. 7 Sioux City Bishop Heelan Sunday afternoon at Jim Lorenzen Field.
The game was suspended Friday night because of lightning.
Campbell, who rushed for 74 yards, scored on runs of three and four yards during consecutive possessions in the third and fourth quarter as Le Mars (3-0, 1-0 Class 3A District 1) increased its lead.
Friday night Campbell caught a two-yard pass on the final play of the first half, barely a yard short of the end zone. Had he scored, he would have increased the Bulldogs' lead by two touchdowns.
"I ran into the ref when I was coming across the middle," said Campbell, who leads the Bulldogs with seven touchdowns. "It made me stall, then the safety got to me. Had (the safety) not been there, I could have got in.
"But it didn't really matter, because we came in all pumped up today. Our defense showed up ready to play and our offense showed up ready to play. We could pretty much do whatever we wanted against them."
"Campbell is our money runner when we get in the end zone," said Le Mars Coach Jim Boyd. "Campbell was solid, Eric (Tonsfelt) was solid, Hoffy (Corey Hoffman) was solid, (Justin) Phelan was solid. I don't have one standout player.
"Everyone does their job out there and if I substitute them for someone, they come in and do their job. That's what makes us special."
Le Mars exploded for 350 yards total offense. Phelan, who rushed nine times for 92 yards Friday, finished with 117 yards on 18 carries as Heelan took away the quarterback option part of the offense, thanks to stops led by Heelan linebackers Chris Calvillo and Kasey Neumann along with tackle Brady Engle.
Phelan, who scored on a 45-yard run Friday, recorded his second consecutive rushing game of over 100 yards. He also picked up his third straight triple-digit passing effort, completing 8 of 12 passes for 127 yards.
Phelan's 44-yard pass to Josh Reuter at Heelan's 15-yard line set up the Bulldogs' lone third-quarter touchdown. Four plays later, Campbell scored from three yards out for an 18-7 lead.
Heelan (1-2, 0-1) had a minus-eight yards of total offense in the third quarter.
Quarterback Clint Sargent was sacked for an eight-yard loss by Hoffman on third down as the Crusaders went three downs and out on their first second-half possession.
Then, on the first play of Heelan's next series, Tonsfelt intercepted a pass, returning it to the Crusaders' 20.
Campbell's six-yard catch on a fourth-down play gave Le Mars a first down at the four and Campbell scored one play later for a 24-7 lead.
Heelan had 214 yards total offense, 109 from Sargent, who completed 13 of 29 passes and threw two interceptions.
Sargent operated a hurry-up offense following Campbell's second touchdown of the day. The senior threaded three consecutive passes, including Brock Martin's eight-yard reception to his 49, but the Crusaders were whistled for a holding penalty on the next play.
Then, Sargent threw his sixth interception of the season as Caleb Van Otterloo grabbed a pass intended for Mike Bisenius.
Sargent was also operating without the services of 6-6, 185-pound John Daniels, who caught a 15-yard pass Friday, but was injured later in the game.
Michael Alcaraz rushed for 50 yards, all of it on Friday. Brandon Wegher, whose 22-yard touchdown run pulled Heelan within 12-7 in the second quarter, added 48 yards rushing while Martin caught five passes for 38 yards.
"Heelan is a very good team," said Boyd. "We feel very fortunate to score as many points as we did. Their defense is super and obviously, they can move the ball offensively.
"They're a new opponent for us who has a great reputation. They've faced better talent.
"The question was, could we meet the challenge and we met the challenge."
"What is there to say when you get beat 31-7," said Heelan Coach Roger Jansen. "I don't know. All I can say is Jim has a nice team and we have to get better."
District action resumes Friday as Heelan hosts undefeated Spencer (3-0, 1-0). Le Mars will play at Storm Lake.
