Semitrailer carrying beef livers crashes

10:59 AM

By Nicole Paseka Journal staff writer | Posted: Wednesday, November 29, 2006
A semitrailer carrying beef livers careened off the Highway 20 exit ramp to Interstate 29 early Wednesday morning, blocking three lanes of traffic as officials cleaned up the mess.

Firefighters washed the blood off of Interstate 29, then salted the wet area so it would not freeze during the frigid morning temperatures.

The semitrailer landed on its side, resting in the mud in the median between the north-bound and south-bound lanes of Interstate 29.

The mess delayed traffic for almost an hour. The Sioux City Police Department received notice of the accident at 8:31 a.m.

The driver was conscious and was taken by ambulance to St. Luke's Regional Medical Center.

"He was shaken up," said Officer Tony Albright of the Sioux City Police Department.

The man's name was not known at the time. He suffered a cut to his forehead and a possible shoulder injury.

Albright said he was not certain why the man lost control of the semitrailer.

Some witnesses said it looked like the semitrailer was traveling too fast, Albright said.

Still, it was possible the load shifted during the exit, causing the driving to lose control, Albright added.

"His load could have shifted," Albright said.

The semitrailer was a Thermo King, owned by Coverleaf Cold Storage of Sioux City.
