Iowa Piano Competition contestants named

The names of the 12 pianists chosen to compete in the 2007 Iowa Piano Competition were announced Sunday afternoon at a recital presented by Assaff Weisman, winner of the 2006 competition, at the Orpheum Theatre.

The intensive three-day competition is hosted by the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra March 8-10. The top six prize winners receive cash awards with the winner receiving $7,500.

The 12 pianists selected for the 2007 Iowa Piano Competition are:

Irina Arbatskaya -- hailing from the Ukraine, Arbatskaya is currently a student at Bowling Green University. She is the gold medal winner from the 1999 Howrowitz International Piano Competition and two-time winner of the Eastern Music Festival competition in 2003 and 2006.

Cathal Breslin -- a native of Ireland, Breslin is a doctoral student at the University of Michigan. He was a prize winner of the 2003 Dublin Piano Competition and is a Fulbright Scholar. He has performed around the globe including London, Birmingham, Madrid and Tokyo and has been broadcast on BBC Radio on numerous occasions.

I-Hsuan Cheng -- a native of Taiwan, Cheng now resides in Massachusetts. She is a winner of the Baja California Bi-Annual Piano Competition and has recently performed in San Diego, Taiwan, Prague, and Taiwan. She received her DMA in performance from the Eastman School of Music where she studied with Nelita True.

Stanislov Khristenko -- born in the Ukraine and now a student at the Moscow State Conservatory, Khristenko is a first prize winner of many competitions and festivals including competitions in Russia, Poland, Greece and Italy. He was a prize winner in the 2005 Cleveland International Piano Competition. He has concertized around the world and currently has CDs issued in the Netherlands, Germany and Russia.

Grace Kim -- currently a doctoral student at The Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, Kim hails from Korea. She is a first prize winner of the Julliard 20th Century Piano Competition, the Gina Bachauer Scholarship Competition and the New Jersey Young Artists Competition. Kim studied with Morningside College's Jim March and has performed with the Northwest Iowa Symphony and the Sioux City Symphony Youth Orchestra under conductor Joe Shufro.

Lolita Lisovskaya -- originally from Russia, Lisovskaya is now a graduate student at Park University. She won the 1996 Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Paris and the Chopin Competition in Germany. Lisovskaya has undergraduate degrees from the Moscow State Conservatory.

So Young Yoon -- born in Korea, Yoon is now a graduate at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She won the University of Texas Concerto Competition as an undergraduate, and was the first prize winner of the Cincinnati Conservatory Piano Competition in 2004. She has soloed with orchestra recently in San Jose, Austin, and Cincinnati.

Stephanie Wu -- currently a student at the Julliard School, Wu studies with Julian Martin. Wu has performed with the Chicago Symphony and won prizes in over 20 competitions in the United States. Stephanie was recently featured on the national radio program "From the Top," and she has toured the major cities in Taiwan with the Chinese Fine Arts Society.

Lei Weng -- born in China, Weng now resides in Cincinnati where he is a doctoral student at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Weng won the Isabel Scionti International Piano Competition in 2001 and the Camerata Piano Competition in 2002. Weng has soloed with orchestras in Fort Worth, Seattle, Shreveport, and Indiana.

May Phang -- this assistant professor of piano at DePauw University, Greencastle, Ind., was the fifth place winner in the Iowa Piano Competition in 2006. Phang has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Banff Festival Chamber Players, DePauw Symphony Orchestra and the Montreal Symphony. She has given recitals throughout the world including the Concertgebouw -Netherlands, Santa Fe, Victoria Concert Hall, Singapore, and Idyllwild Arts Academy, California.

Jessica Osborne -- a Texas native, Osborne is currently studying at Yale University. A first prize winner of the National Symphony Orchestra's Young Artist Award, Osborne also won "Best performance of Russian Music" at the International Russian Music Competition. She has studied at Julliard, Indiana University, and Rice University. In 1997 Osborne won the MTNA-National Division Prize.

Serhii Morozov -- the first prize winner of the Baltimore Music Club Piano Competition in 2005 lives in College Park, Md. Morozov has his DMA in Piano Performance from the University of Maryland and his master's Degree from Moscow State Conservatory, Russia. Morozov has 10 first prize placements in international competition and was the third prize winner in the 2001 World Piano Competition in Cincinnati.
