West simply had no answer for Eric Jorgensen Friday night.
Jorgensen, East High's 6-foot-9 junior, poured in a career-high 41 points and the Black Raiders rolled to an 82-45 Missouri River Activities Conference victory at East High.
The triumph came at an opportune time for East, which had dropped six of its last seven games. Coach Jeff Vanderloo's young squad moved to 7-9 overall and 5-3 in the MRAC heading into a home game with Heelan next Friday.
Heelan moved into first place in the conference with a 69-58 win over North on Friday. The Crusaders are 6-1 in the loop and North 6-2.
Jorgensen's total was six points shy of East's school record of 47 by Gary Pettit in 1965. Jorgensen, averaging 17.0 points, also scored 28 against West on Dec. 19 in a tight contest won by East, 78-76.
"Coach was on me before the game because he wants more than three shots in a half like I got in our last game against TJ," said Jorgensen, who made 18 of 24 shots. "I knew I had a size advantage every time I got it, so I felt like I could make a shot. Our team put up 82 points and that was the most important thing."
Charlie Murphy, West's tallest player at 6-foot-4, did all he could to defend Jorgensen, but once the talented junior got into position, he couldn't be stopped. One of his 18 baskets was a thunderous slam dunk with 5:10 left in the game.
"We put a little pressure on Eric because we haven't been too happy with his play the last game or two," said East Coach Vanderloo. "We kept reminding him that the last game he had three shots at halftime. I told him that I don't care if your teammates never throw you the ball, three shots isn't going to get it done. He should get five shots off rebounds alone.
"He wanted the ball and his teammates got it to him. It was good to see us move the ball tonight."
Andy Dougherty, a 6-4 junior, added 12 points for the Black Raiders while Wil Wilson and Dane Larson finished with eight points each. East dominated the boards to the tune of 55-28, led by Jorgensen with nine and Wilson and Dougherty seven apiece.
Josh Collins scored 11 points for West before fouling out with 6:20 left. The Wolverines fell to 1-13 overall and 0-8 in the MRAC.
East set the tone early, going on a 13-0 run in the final 5:20 of the first quarter to erase a 5-3 deficit. Jorgensen erupted for 16 points in the second quarter, missing only one shot in nine attempts as the Black Raiders raced to a 39-24 halftime advantage.
A 16-0 spurt to start the third quarter put the game out of reach and East outscored the Wolverines 25-5 in the stanza. Jorgensen had 31 points after three quarters and left the game for good after scoring his final basket with just over four minutes remaining.
"It's pretty tough to stop him (Jorgensen) when he gets that kind of position," said West Coach Steve Evans. "I don't think there was a time he didn't catch the ball within five feet of the basket.
"With Josh in foul trouble, it takes us out of a little bit of our flow. We know the kinds of things we need to work on, so we'll try some different things and see what we can do."
West shot just 19 of 65 for 29 percent and went to the free throw line only six times. East, thanks mainly to Jorgensen's domination, was 34 for 66 for 51.5 percent and made 13 of 21 charity tosses.
"The one thing these guys have done even though things haven't gone quite as well as we want is they haven't quit," said Vanderloo. "They keep working their butts off."
East defeated Heelan 67-62 on Jan. 6 at the Tyson Events Center and is 4-1 against metro competition, its only loss coming to North.
In a game that saw seven lead changes in the fourth quarter, West's sophomore team pulled out an 81-78 win over East. West's J.J. Grant led all scorers with 24 points while teammates Shawn Brown and Lonnie Dickerson added 20 and 18, respectively. East was led by Jerad Barth with 19 points while Jeff Sponder tacked on 16, John Keilman 15 and Taylor Pollow 13.
West hosts Sioux Falls O'Gorman Monday.
