Mercy plans Respiratory Conference

Mercy Medical Center-Sioux City will host its 14th annual Respiratory Conference for respiratory therapists, physicians, nurses and other medical professionals from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. March 15 at the Sioux City Convention Center.
The conference will provide attendees with the latest information about research, diagnosis and treatment options in the field of pulmonary and cardiopulmonary medicine.
Bruce Houghton, M.D., associate professor of medicine at Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, will present on the topic of evidence-based medicine.
Del Mandl, Pharm.D., clinical manager of pharmacy at Mercy Medical Center-Sioux City, will present on the topic of respiratory medications. He will discuss the necessity for new formulations of metered dose inhalers and present information on their proper administration and use.
Robin Dickerson, respiratory therapist and clinical product specialist for Fisher and Paykel Healthcare Inc. in Laguna Hills, Calif., will present on the topic of "Neonatal Optimal Resuscitation."
Keith Allen, M.D., cardiothoracic surgeon for Mercy Medical Center-Sioux City, will present "Operable vs. Inoperable Lung Cancer Surgery." He will discuss how to determine who is a good candidate for such surgery and explain how to predict the probability of ventilator dependence after surgery.
Rob Demming, respiratory therapist for Alegent Health Sleep Treatment Center in Omaha, will present on the topic of sleep apnea. He will discuss its symptoms, its short and long-term effects and viable treatment options.
Nancy Schreiber, donation services coordinator for the Iowa Donor Network, will offer the conference's final presentation on the topic of organ and tissue donation. She will discuss the critical need for life-saving organs and tissues and describe the role of the respiratory therapist in the identification, referral and management of potential organ donors.
Continuing education credit will be available for respiratory therapists, physicians and nurses.
Cost for the one-day conference is $75 for physicians and mid-level providers, $65 for all other healthcare professions and $35 for students provided that registrations are postmarked by March 6. Late registration fees will be $10 more after that date.
