Jackson Recovery Centers Inc., a regional addiction prevention and treatment provider, has contracted with Mercy Medical Services for the services of Dr. David Wolff as its new medical director. Wolff replaces Dr. Dale Wassmuth, who has served as medical director at Jackson since 2002, when the organization's founder, Dr. Bill Jackson, retired.

Wolff, a board certified family practice physician, received his medical degree from the University of California at Irvine. He practiced in Aberdeen, S.D. before moving to Sioux City, where he practiced in the St Luke's Regional Medical Center Emergency Department. For the last 15 years, Wolff, along with his wife, Dr. Cynthia Wolff, has been in private practice in the Akron Mercy Medical Clinic in Akron, Iowa.

''My career path has been a natural progression into this position with Jackson Recovery Centers. Ever since my rotation in medical school in alcoholism and addiction, I have been interested in the field of addiction medicine,'' Wolff said.

Jackson Recovery Centers will participate in his continuing medical education and training by supporting his pursuit of an American Society of Addiction Medicine certification.

'My new role as medical director can assist in destigmatizing the disease of addiction,'' Wolff said. ''Addiction is an illness of the brain, and like other diseases, has a basis in medicine and science.''

Wolff's position also will bridge the gap between the physician community and Jackson Recovery Centers. ''Physicians have a large responsibility in managing the care of their patients and making appropriate referrals to quality programs outside of their area of specialization,'' he said. "Building a professional connection with physicians will enhance the local referral base, resulting in more people seeking and receiving help for their problems with addiction.''
