Journal's Miller 'Ad Person of Year'
Posted: Sunday, February 25, 2007
The Advertising Federation of Sioux City honored Bruce R. Miller of the Sioux City Journal as its Ad Person of the Year during a ceremony at the Clarion Hotel in Sioux City on Saturday.
The group, conducting its annual ADDYs awards, selected Miller for his leadership and outstanding service in the promotion and perpetuation of the industry of advertising.
Miller joined the Journal news staff in 1979 as a reporter/photographer and was named managing editor/Living/graphics in 1989. He is a native of North Dakota and a graduate of Moorhead (Minn.) State University. He holds a master's degree in journalism from the University of Minnesota.
Miller's enthusiasm for, and involvement with the entertainment industry creates a natural partnership with the advertising community -- advertisers rely on mass media to deliver their messages in an effective manner, and entertainment products need to be advertised, officials noted.
Miller, longtime master of ceremonies for the ADDYs awards, was lauded as having provided repeated promotion for the annual Addy's Presentation through his mass media exposure as an entertainment and newspaper personality. His professional persona and creative abilities as master of ceremonies for the Addy's have helped to create a quality, entertaining atmosphere in which to honor the best efforts of Sioux City area advertisers, leaders noted in the nomination.
Journal Publisher Ron Peterson praised the Sioux City Advertising Federation for its selection of Miller.
"In many ways Bruce isn't just the face of the Sioux City Journal, he's the face of Sioux City," said Peterson. "For decades, Bruce has put his creative energies to work for the betterment of Sioux City, either by hosting hundreds of events for charitable causes or simply by being there to offer his expertise in helping officials convey their messages to the public."
Miller's talent has also been a key factor in several redesigns of the newspaper as it transitioned from a paste-up product to one paginated electronically.
"Bruce has been there to help lead our design efforts in at least two generations of change," Peterson said. "His graphic knowledge allows the Journal and its advertisers to communicate effectively and efficiently in a time of great demands on readers' time. This year we plan to unveil a direct-to-plate technology that will allow us to better meet the needs of readers and advertisers. And we'll surely call on Bruce again to lead the charge."
