Weather again plays havoc with area sports

By Barry Poe - Journal sports writer | Posted: Monday, March 05, 2007
Posted from 03/03/07:
The snow continued to pile up and the winds were howling again Friday, forcing more shuffling of the area sports slate.

Except for a few exceptions, games were basically pushed back another day, leaving tournament officials crossing their fingers that the weather will clear up today.

The East at North boys Class 4A substate semifinal had already been postponed until 2 o'clock today. Now, the Heelan vs. Sergeant Bluff-Luton Class 3A substate semifinal will also be played tonight, beginning at 7 o'clock at West High.

Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson will host Council Bluffs Lewis Central tonight at 7. The winner of that game plays the East-North winner in a substate final at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Le Mars and MOC-Floyd Valley meet at 2 o'clock this afternoon at Sioux Center. The winner takes on the Heelan-Sergeant Bluff-Luton survivor Tuesday at Tyson Events Center in downtown Sioux City.

Four Iowa Class 1A substate semifinals involving Journal circulation area teams were also moved back another day. A couple of the games will be played earlier than they were originally scheduled.

George-Little Rock takes on Boyden-Hull at Hull Western Christian High School at 3 p.m. while Wall Lake View-Auburn plays Aurelia at Cherokee Washington High School at 5 o'clock. Whiting and Charter Oak-Ute meet at Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto while Harris-Lake Park locks up against Algona Garrigan, both games getting under way at 7 o'clock.

The George-Little Rock vs. Boyden-Hull winner will play the Whiting vs. Charter Oak-Ute winner in a 6 o'clock Monday substate final at Tyson Events Center. An Iowa Class 2A substate final between Sheldon and Hull Western Christian follows at 8 p.m.

First-round games in a South Dakota District 8A boys basketball tournament at Elk Point-Jefferson have been moved to tonight, with Vermillion playing Alcester-Hudson at 6 o'clock and Elk Point-Jefferson meeting Dakota Valley at 7:45. A district final matching the winners will be played Monday at 7 p.m. at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls.

Because of the weather issues, the North Central Conference basketball tournament has also been reshuffled. NCC commissioner Roger Thomas said that in the best interest of getting the tournament going, they were forced to look at a number of scenarios. In the end, Thomas said, it made sense to hold the semifinal round at the highest seed.

Therefore, the University of South Dakota will host Minnesota-Duluth in a men's semifinal at 5 o'clock today at the DakotaDome. The other semifinal matches Minnesota State and St. Cloud State at 3 p.m. in Mankato, Minn.

South Dakota plays host to Nebraska-Omaha in a women's semifinal today while North Dakota hosts Minnesota-Duluth.

The NCC tournament championship games will be played Sunday at sites to be determined, most likely in Grand Forks, N.D., and Vermillion, S.D., as was previously scheduled. It was announced that all times will be tentative based on team travel today.

Switching to the wrestling mat, the Iowa State Dual Team Tournament has been postponed until Monday in Cedar Rapids.

North High goes up against Bettendorf in a Class 3A dual at noon, Aurelia-Galva-Holstein wrestles Clear Lake in a Class 2A match at noon and Akron-Westfield tangles with Truro Interstate 35 in a Class 1A matchup at 10 a.m.

The Sioux City Musketeers were unable to leave town for the second straight day on Friday, so their weekend games at Chicago have been postponed. Both games will be rescheduled for a later date.

The snowstorm has forced Morningside's baseball and softball teams to delay their spring break departures. The Mustangs' baseball doubleheader against Missouri Southern scheduled for today at Joplin, Mo., as well as softball games against Purdue North Central and William Penn on Sunday in Tucson, Ariz., have been cancelled.
