Vietnam Veterans Fund seeks educators

Posted: Monday, March 12, 2007
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is looking for educators to join its Teach Vietnam Teachers Network "Class of 2007."

The nationwide network of educators at all grade levels is dedicated to teaching students about the Vietnam War era and building awareness of the Memorial Fund's educational initiatives.

Teachers in Siouxland and the surrounding area are encouraged to apply after the recent announcement that the traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, "The Wall That Heals," also sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, will be displayed in South Sioux City Oct. 18-21.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, often referred to simply as "The Wall," is the most visited memorial in the nation's capital and is commemorating the 25th anniversary of its dedication this year.

The Memorial Fund provides educators chosen to join the Network with educational resources and hosts a national conference in Washington, D.C., to help members develop lesson plans. Workshops and seminars about the Vietnam War and The Wall will be led by veterans, fellow teachers and other guest experts.

The conference also includes activities at The Wall. The anniversary year Teach Vietnam Teachers Network National Conference will be July 18-22 at American University. The Memorial Fund will provide meals, accommodations and local transportation during the conference to all Network members.

Members of the Network represent the Memorial Fund in their school districts and communities, helping to educate other teachers and neighbors about the war's legacy and how it continues to impact the nation today. The Teach Vietnam Teachers Network was established in 2002. Currently, more than 200 educators are members of the Network.

Educators interested in joining the Teach Vietnam Teachers Network should contact the Memorial Fund at (202) 393-0090 or e-mail vvmf@vvmf.org. Applications also can be downloaded from the Memorial Fund's Web site, www.vvmf.org. To be considered for the class of 2007, teachers must ensure that all application materials are received by the Memorial Fund by March 30. A limited number of teachers will be accepted for the class of 2007.

Established in 1979, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is the nonprofit organization authorized by Congress to build the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Today, through a series of outreach programs, it is dedicated to preserving the legacy of The Wall, promoting healing, educating about the impact of the Vietnam War and is building the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Center, an underground educational facility, near The Wall.
