The mayor of West Okoboji, Iowa, has reportedly been upgraded from critical to serious condition since a crash Saturday where he was thrown from the school bus he was driving.
Howard Titterington, 79, Milford, Iowa, was operating the bus for the Okoboji Community School District. He was reportedly eastbound on Dickinson County Road A-34 at the intersection of County Road M-27 when the bus collided with a northbound pickup and trailer shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday.
Titterington was thrown from the bus and found beneath it. The bus had to be raised by the Milford Rescue Unit to extricate him. He was flown to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where he was reportedly in critical condition on Saturday afternoon, but a hospital spokeswoman said on Sunday afternoon that he was then in serious condition.
The driver of the pickup, Tyler Tessum, 24, of Everly, Iowa, was pulling a trailer that contained shearing equipment. Tessum refused medical treatment at the scene.
Okoboji Community Schools Superintendent Bob Miller said the bus carried no students at the time of the collision. Titterington was returning from Sibley, where he had taken a group of speech students to a competition.
