Morningside's Hansen hurls gem
Posted: Saturday, March 24, 2007
Morningside's Josh Hansen twirled a two-hit shutout, outdueling Midland Lutheran's Mike Burdine as the Mustangs clipped Midland 1-0 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference baseball opener for both teams Friday at Lewis and Clark Park.
Midland Lutheran won the second game 14-1 in five innings.
Hansen, a junior from West Monona High School, struck out five and walked three, allowing only two singles by Chris Knutson. Hansen, now 3-2 for the season, got all of the help he needed when the Mustangs scored in the bottom of the third inning.
Jared Noteboom, who had two of Morningside's four hits, tripled to right field to lead off the third. Noteboom scored one out later on a sacrifice bunt by Mark Martindale.
Midland's Knutson had a two-out single in the third and one-out, bad hop infield single in the sixth. The Warriors' only other serious threat came in the third when they put runners on second and third with two outs, but Hansen retired Tim Jacobi on a pop out to first base.
Noteboom also singled in the fifth inning while Tom Kohl and David Manceaux, the GPAC and NAIA Region III player of the week, added singles for the Mustangs.
Midland Lutheran roughed up four Morningside pitchers for 14 runs on 11 hits in the second game. Kevin Schwamel belted a pair of home runs and finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs.
Morningside scored its only run in the first when Manceaux singled and his courtesy runner, Preston Fischer, scored on an error by the first baseman. The Mustangs finished with five hits, all singles.
Morningside, now 11-10, plays a doubleheader at Hastings on Sunday.
