While seniors Clint Sargent of Bishop Heelan, Josh Collins of West and Jehmica McDaniel of North certainly enjoyed stellar final prep campaigns, there will no doubt be plenty of good things in store for the future of Sioux City boys basketball.
Sargent, a South Dakota State University recruit, and Northern Iowa University football signee Collins repeated as All-Metro honorees, selected by Sioux City and South Sioux City coaches. North's McDaniel, meanwhile, landed on the honor squad for the first time after helping the Stars reach the Class 4A state tournament.
Two of the remaining three All-Metro selections, Alex Walker of North and Brennan Cougill of Heelan, are sophomores. Eric Jorgensen, East's towering junior post, also made the first team.
Sargent, the starting football quarterback, led Heelan to a Class 3A state runner-up finish, averaging 19.1 points, tops among metro scorers. The Crusaders' point guard moved into ninth place on Sioux City's all-time boys scoring list with 1,074 points. Sargent was named to the Iowa Newspaper Association Class 3A all-state first team.
Heelan, which finished 22-5, lost to Waverly-Shell Rock 74-51 in the 3A state championship game. The Crusaders, though, ended Harlan's 52-game winning streak with a thrilling 57-56 victory in a semifinal.
West's Collins tossed in 17.5 points an outing, reaching double figures in 17 of the 20 games he played. A three-year starter, Collins wound up with 980 career points.
The 6-foot McDaniel, known for his quickness, was one of four double-figure scorers for North at 12.5 points per game. The Stars of Coach John Vanderloo finished 17-7, losing a first-round Class 4A state tournament game to eventual champion Linn-Mar, 73-60.
North's Walker, a talented 6-foot-5 sophomore, led the Stars with a 15.7 scoring average to go along with an even 10 rebounds per game. The son of North girls basketball coach Kirk Walker, The Sioux City Journal's Siouxland Basketball Coach of the Year, Alex also has the ability to shoot from long range, making 34 of 62 three-point shots.
Although just a sophomore, Walker was named to the Class 4A Iowa Newspaper Association all-state third team.
Heelan's Cougill, a 6-foot-9, 260-pound sophomore, averaged 16.7 points and 10.5 rebounds while earning second-team Class 3A all-state accolades. His tip-in at the buzzer gave the Crusaders the dramatic state semifinal victory over Harlan.
East's Jorgensen, a second-team Class 4A all-state selection, finished second behind Sargent in the city scoring derby with 17.8 points per game. The 6-9 junior, who also pulled down 10.4 rebounds, poured in 41 points in a win over West, the city's top single-game effort of the season.
A young East squad posted a 9-12 record, but brings back five of its top six scorers.
Heelan's Dino Cizmic, a 6-3 senior, and John Daniels, a 6-6 junior, were honorable mention picks. Cizmic averaged 9.5 points, but missed the last 13 games because of an injury.
North's Mike Tillo, a 6-1 senior, scored 12.2 points while senior Ben Hirsch (6-3) was South Sioux City's leading scorer with a 13.5 average. East juniors Andy Dougherty (6-4) and Dane Larson (6-3) were also honorable mention selections. Dougherty produced 12.2 points per game.
