Gang prevention meeting to be held in Spanish

2:10 PM

By Lynn Zerschling Journal staff writer | Posted: Wednesday, March 28, 2007
A discussion on gangs in the tri-state area and what social service agencies, the schools, the courts and police can do to curtail gang activities will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. April 5 at the Sioux City Convention Center.

Those making presentations at this forum will speak in Spanish only, event organizer Susie Squires of South Sioux City said Wednesday. Squires is president and founder of the Watchful Eye Foundation.

Keynote speakers will include Luis Alva Martinez, Mexican vice consulate; gang specialist Leo Miller, and Sonia Villalpando, owner of LA Fashions. Squires said several other people will be invited to make presentations.

"We are seeing a lot of graffiti right now," Squires said. "If we're not careful, it could get worse."

She said this forum will be held in Spanish with a similar meeting in English April 19. The second meeting also will be at 6 p.m. at the Sioux City Convention Center.

City Manager Paul Eckert said, "We think it's a great format and encourage people to attend."

Squires said a number of posters advertising the April 5 forum have been posted and sent to churches.

The Watchful Eye Foundation's goal is "to serve as a clearing house for various programs in the tri-state area," she explained.

Its mission is to promote awareness on domestic violence, create goodwill with the Latino community as well as other non-English speaking groups and to improve the quality of life.
