Morningside wins twice in own tournament

Morningside blanked a pair of foes on the first day of action in the Morningside Invitational softball tournament Friday at the SYA Complex.
The Mustangs, who improved their overall record to 19-5, shut out University of Saint Mary (Kan.) 4-0 and Minnesota-Crookston 11-0.
Morningside led wire-to-wire after scoring three runs in the first inning against University of St. Mary, with Whitney McElrath pitching a three-hit shutout. McElrath, a former Woodbury Central prep standout, walked four and struck out three while raising her record to 10-4.
McElrath also contributed an RBI double in the first inning. Kendra Klein doubled home a run and Jenna Jurrens had an RBI single in the first. McElrath had a double and single for the Mustangs while Julia Husk chipped in with two singles. Losing pitcher Meghan Walsh allowed seven hits.
The Mustangs played long ball in a six-inning triumph over Minnesota-Crookston, socking four home runs, including two by Jurrens.
Jurrens, a senior from George, Iowa, slugged a two-run homer in the second inning and added a grand slam in the sixth, finshing with six RBIs. Catie Bobier put the Mustangs in front 2-0 with a two-run shot in the second while Alisha Wheat, a former East High prep, added a solo shot during a five-run third frame.
Aside from the homers by Jurrens and Wheat, the fifth inning also featured an RBI single by Megan Tuttle and a sacrifice fly by McElrath. Freshman pitcher Kelly Baumert held Crookston hitless over the first four innings, raising her record to 10-1. Baumert, who allowed two hits, struck out five and didn't walk a batter. Amanda Cades worked the final two innings, walking two and striking out four while not allowing a hit.
Morningside finished with 11 hits, including the two homers by Jurrens, a homer and single by Bobier and two singles by Vanessa Houston. April Houston added a triple, the first hit of her collegiate career.
Northwestern blanked University of Saint Mary 9-0 behind Laura Calvert, who twirled a three-hit shutout in the five-inning contest and also finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and three RBIs. Tina Jacobsma added two hits and drove in two runs while Lizz Swanson and Krystal Van Wyk chipped in two hits each to the 12-hit Red Raider attack.
The Red Raiders rolled past Minnesota-Crookston 12-0, collecting 12 hits in the abbreviated three-inning game. Winning pitcher Brandi Redel had two of the hits and pitched a no-hitter while Amy Larson and Laura Bahrke added two hits each.
Dordt split games, downing Minnesota-Crookston 6-1 and falling to College of St. Mary (Omaha) 5-4. Jessica Klassen was the winning pitcher against Crookston, while College of St. Mary scored two runs in the top of the seventh to rally past the Lady Defenders.
In other action, Concordia slipped past College of St. Mary 1-0 and downed University of Saint Mary 14-1.
With rain in the forecast today, the tournament will be shifted indoors to the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D. Depending on the weather, Sunday's six games will be played either at the DakotaDome or the SYA Complex.
