Buena Vista opens
IIAC play with victory
STORM LAKE, Iowa -- Lance Eddie hit his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot that highlighted a four-run eighth inning as Buena Vista's baseball team opened Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 5-1 win over Simpson College Friday.
Marc Goeders snapped a scoreless tie for the Beavers with an RBI single in the seventh. Winning pitcher Ryan Dupic supported his cause with an RBI double in the eighth while teammate Justin List recorded his second hit of the game on an RBI single two batters later.
Alex Fokken added two hits for Buena Vista (7-3, 1-0 IIAC). Dupic (2-0) scattered six hits and walked one while striking out five in eight innings.
Wayne State win
streak ends at 7
WAYNE, Neb. -- The Wayne State College softball team had its seven-game win streak come to an end here Friday, falling 6-0 and 5-4 to Minnesota State at Pete Chapman Field.
Samantha Rohr tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener, striking out seven. KIley Peterson had two of the Wayne State hits.
Wendy Ward was 2-for-3 at the plate in the second game with a home run and two RBIs while Kiley Peterson added a two-run single. Karen Hain was the losing pitcher in both games.
Wayne State, now 16-6, plays in the Nebraska-Omaha tournament on Sunday.
Area college baseball
games are postponed
Thanks to Friday morning's rain around Siouxland, several area college baseball games were postponed because of poor field conditions.
Morningside College's Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader against Dordt at Sioux Center, Iowa, has been rescheduled for Monday, starting at 4 p.m.
Northwestern College's GPAC home games on Friday against Concordia and Saturday against Hastings have been rescheduled. Concordia will play at Northwestern on Monday and Hastings will make the trip on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Red Raiders' scheduled home game on Tuesday against Dordt has been postponed to another date yet to be determined.
Wayne State's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games against Minnesota-Crookston have been moved to Sunday and Monday. The games were originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, with noon starts. The teams will play two seven-inning games each day with the first pitch scheduled for noon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex.

SIOUX FALLS -- South Dakota's men's golf team has a 299-301 lead over Morningside following Friday's first-round play at the Augustana Spring Invitational held at Willow Run Golf Course.
Jared Degen shot a 73 (36-37) to pace USD. Bryan Bye (34-40 -- 74), Ryan Bak (40-35 -- 75), Matt Rantapaa (36-41 -- 77) and Mark Turner (38-42 -- 80) also played for the Coyotes.
Justin Hamilton shot a 72 (36-36) for Morningside and is tied with North Dakota's Grant Corbett (37-35) for second place. Both are chasing leader Nick Weets (35-36 -- 71) of Augustana.
Morningside is also represented at the meet by Brad Huyck (35-40 -- 75), Brandon Morehead (35-41 -- 76), Chris Rager (38-40 -- 78) and Travis Hemmingson (40-38 -- 78).
Briar Cliff is 13th in the team standings at 322. Jared Koch (37-41 -- 88), Quinn Hoffman (38-42 -- 80), Tyler Schiltz (41-39 -- 80), Brandon Hamilton (42-42 -- 84) and Matt Wanning (47-44 -- 91) played for the Chargers.

USD softball team
VERMILLION, S.D. -- MSU Moorhead's softball team hiked their season record to 13-5 with a 4-1, 4-2 non-conference doubleheader sweep over South Dakota Friday at the DakotaDome.
Losing pitcher Tagney Jones hit a pair of doubles and drove in the Coyotes' lone run to tie the game in the bottom of the first inning. Krystal Kirwan doubled.
Jones had two hits for South Dakota (10-20) in the nightcap. Losing pitcher Tiffany Mockenhaupt hit an RBI single that tied tied the game in the bottom of the first.
