VERMILLION, S.D. -- Morningside defeated Kansas Wesleyan (10-2) and Minnesota-Morris (9-0) Sunday to improve its record to 22-5 and finish with a 4-0 record in its own Mustang Invitational softball competition in the DakotaDome.
In other Sunday games, Doane defeated Minnesota-Morris (14-4), Jamestown blanked Mount Marty (4-0) and edged Doane (7-6) and Mount Marty defeated Minnesota-Morris (7-3).
Morningside rapped a dozen hits in its win over Wesleyan and Whitney McElrath improved her pitching record to 11-4 with a three-hitter that included four strikeouts.
Julia Husk swatted a two-run homer and Alisha Wheat a two-run double. Wheat had a second two-bagger in the win and Alisha Krieg had three hits.
In the 9-0 shutout of Morris, Morningside's Kelly Baumert spaced four hits and struck out 11 of the 19 batters she faced.
McElrath belted a home run in the win, while Jenna Jurrens doubled and singled and Krieg singled twice in an eight-hit attack. Kendra Klein also doubled for the Mustangs.
Doane's Pam Masker had a home run and four RBIs and teammate Shelly White slugged a homer and double as the Tigers swatted 16 hits in beating Minnesota-Morris.
Jamestown's Nikki Marcoux retired 16 straight Mount Marty batters before J.J. Brosamle broke up her no-hit bid with a bloop single in the seventh. Brittany Sehr gleaned Mount Marty's other hit, a single in the seventh. Marcoux struck out seven.
Marcoux also recorded a save in Jamestown's win over Doane. Courtney Wong and Jody Lantz homered for the Jimmies and Jennifer Montoya had a homer and double for Doane.
In late Saturday games, Dordt beat Kansas Wesleyan (9-3) and Kansas Wesleyan trimmed Mount Marty (11-1).
While the Morningside softball competition operated under the DakotaDome roof, rain and wet grounds played havoc with several area college baseball and softball games scheduled outdoors.
Briar Cliff, rained out of a Saturday baseball twin bill with Concordia, also had a Sunday doubleheader with Hastings at Bishop Mueller Field washed out.
The Chargers will now host Hastings today (1:30 p.m.) and Concordia Tuesday (1 p.m.). Also, BC will shift its Wednesday doubleheader with Dordt at Bishop Mueller to Thursday (1:30). The Chargers are 8-9 overall and 3-1 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
Morningside's doubleheader Sunday with Dana at Lewis and Clark Park was also postponed and will now be played Wednesday (2 o'clock). The Mustangs will also play a twin bill today at Dordt beginning at 4 o'clock.
Also in baseball, Buena Vista's Iowa Conference Sunday baseball doubleheader with Simpson in Storm Lake was called off because of wet field conditions and BV's softball doubleheader with Wartburg Sunday was also postponed indefinitely.
In golf, the two-day USD Invitational in Vermillion was shortened and will be played today at The Bluffs. Sunday's first round was eliminated.
