Briar Cliff business students take top honors

Posted: Friday, April 06, 2007
For the fourth consecutive year, Briar Cliff University's Students in Free Enterprise was among those with top honors at the 2007 Free Enterprise Regional Competition and Career Opportunity Fair in Minneapolis.

Briar Cliff's SIFE team qualified for the SIFE USA National Exposition in Dallas, Texas on May 6-8, after co-winning its six-team league along with Southwest Minnesota State that also included SIFE teams from the College of St. Benedict and St. John's, Drake University, Minot State University and Macalester College.

During the competition, teams are judged on how effectively their projects teach the principles of free enterprise in five different topics: business ethics, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, market economics and success skills. Projects were judged by corporate executives during 24-minute presentations and all SIFE entries were evaluated on creativity and innovation, results of education programs, success in utilizing resources and documentation of activities.

Several of Briar Cliff's SIFE team projects this past year included: SIFE Jeopardy, Fight Against Piracy Public Service Announcement, the original play and published book "The Lemonade Stand," and a partnership with Siouxland Tanzania Educational and Medical Ministries.

Presenters from Briar Cliff included Tyler Schiltz, president of SIFE, of Algona, Iowa; Joann Ammann, SIFE recruiting chair, of Butterfield, Minn.; Matt Gaul, vice president of SIFE, of Sheldon, Iowa; Mike Mertes of Sibley, Iowa; David Muff, SIFE sustainability chair, of South Sioux City; Jackie Sporrer, SIFE secretary, from Dedham, Iowa; and Cory Quinn of Okoboji, Iowa
