Phillies option Bisenius to Triple-A Ottawa

Posted: Monday, April 09, 2007
Despite a pair of impressive relief appearances for the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday and Saturday, Sioux City Bishop Heelan graduate Joe Bisenius was optioned Sunday to Triple-A Ottawa of the International League.

The Phillies also announced they had recalled another Iowa pitcher, Jon Lieber, from Class A Clearwater, Fla. Lieber, from Council Bluffs, was on a rehabilitation assignment mending a ribcage injury.

Philadelphia also acquired pitcher Francisco Rosario in a weekend trade with Toronto.

Bisenius, a lanky righthander who began his collegiate career at Oklahoma State and then transferred to Oklahoma City University, made his major league debut last Thursday, working 1 1/3 innings without surrendering a run in a home loss to the Atlanta Braves.

Saturday, against the Florida Marlins in Miami, Bisenius spelled Philadelphia starter Bretty Myers with one out in the fifth inning after Josh Willingham's two-run double sent the Marlins in front 6-3.

Bisenius walked Joe Borchard, then struck out Alejandro Diaza and retired Matt Treanor on a fly ball to center to keep his earned run average at 0.00.

Jayson Werth pinch-hit for the Heelan grad in the top of the sixth and struck out. Ryan Madson replaced Bisenius and was later charged with two eighth-inning Florida runs.

Meanwhile, Phillies starter Zach Segovia made his major league debut Sunday in a 6-4 loss to the Marlins, allowing eight hits and five runs in five innings and was also optioned to Triple-A Ottawa after the game.
