The Siouxland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For the Cure, one of 125 Komen affiliates leading the global movement to end breast cancer forever, recently provided community grants totaling $103,000 to support Siouxland area breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs.
"In order to ensure our funds are making the greatest impact, the Komen Siouxland Affiliate works with local medical experts and community leaders to conduct comprehensive community needs assessments," said Marilyn Rensink, Komen Siouxland Affiliate president.
"We have identified specific, unmet breast health needs within our community and 'filled in the gaps,' aiming to deliver the life-saving message of early detection and provide assistance to medically-underserved breast cancer patients and their families."
The Komen Siouxland Affiliate's local fundraising efforts have enabled it to grant funds for the following projects for the 2007 grant period:
Crittenton Center - Project Care: This project will deliver breast health care, breast cancer information and early detection instruction to a minimum of 400 uninsured or underinsured high-risk women who receive prenatal and postpartum care through the Crittenton Center Maternal Health Program.
June E. Nylen Cancer Center - Lymphedema Clinic: This clinic will be developed at the cancer center to serve women who have breast cancer, providing both education and treatment.
June E. Nylen Cancer Center - SOS: Serving Our Sisters (Mammograms): This program promotes annual screening mammograms for underserved/uninsured women. The program addresses barriers to screening and identifies strategies for motivating women to have regular mammograms. SOS specifically targets Siouxland women, ages 40 to 49, who need financial assistance to cover the cost of this simple yet vital screening. The program applies to residents in the counties of Woodbury, Plymouth, Sioux and Lyon in Iowa and Clay and Union in South Dakota,
June E. Nylen Cancer Center - Social Services Program/Patient Navigator: This social services program assists breast cancer patients and their families in navigating the challenges that surround cancer treatment. As a critical contributor to the holistic treatment approach, the Social Worker/Patient Navigator will promote patient well-being by addressing body, mind, and spirit.
Mercy Foundation - Hereditary Breast Cancer: Next Steps increases access to hereditary cancer screening and new guidelines for risk management. This program addresses the fact that Siouxland women bear the burden of a higher-than-average breast cancer rate in both incidence and mortality.
Floyd Valley Hospital - Pink Ribbon Campaign-Breast Model: The program aims to purchase a breast model that will be utilized in a variety of situations, such as educating mammography patients on the correct way to do a breast self exam.
Sioux Center Community Hospital and Health Center - Caring for the Community: The Sioux Center Hospital in conjunction with Mid-Sioux Opportunities will offer mammograms for the underinsured and uninsured living in the Sioux Center service area.
Up to 75 percent of the net income from Komen Siouxland Affiliate events and activities stays in Siouxland to support non-duplicative, community-based breast health and breast cancer outreach programs for the medically underserved in the five-county service area. In addition, the Affiliate will receive funds from Komen for the Cure’s national fundraising efforts and corporate partner programs.
A minimum of 25 percent of the funds raised by the Affiliate directly support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Programs, which, for the last 25 years, have provided much-needed funding for groundbreaking breast cancer research and innovative projects in the areas of breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment.
The signature event and largest contributor of grant dollars for the Siouxland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is Tickled Pink. The event will be held Oct. 19, 2007 at the Sioux City Convention Center.
