Mustangs ride strong pitching performances to GPAC sweep

Posted: Sunday, April 15, 2007
Josh Hansen and Heath Horsley twirled back-to-back pitching gems, leading Morningside to a Great Plains Athletic Conference baseball sweep of Hastings Saturday at Lewis and Clark Park.

Hansen tossed a one-hit shutout in the opener and the Mustangs pushed across the game's only run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Horsley allowed just two hits in the second game, won by Morningside 7-0.

The sweep improved Morningside's overall record to 17-14 and GPAC mark to 7-5. Hastings is 15-10 overall and 7-5 in league play.

Hansen, a junior from Onawa, Iowa, surrendered only a two-out, sixth inning single to Andy McGowan, striking out four and walking four. Nebraska Wesleyan's Tom Hranac was just as effective, carrying a shutout into the final inning.

Tom Kohl singled to open the Mustang seventh, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jason Wysong. Hranac, who gave up seven hits, was then replaced by Cory Hilgenkamp, who promptly gave up a game-winning pinch-hit single to Nick Paulsen.

Nate Gomez had a pair of doubles for Morningside while Jason Engleman was 2-for-3. Hansen improved his pitching record to 5-3.

Horsley, a senior from Lawton-Bronson High School, picked up his sixth pitching win against just one loss, striking out seven and walking two. Nebraska Wesleyan's hits were singles by Jared Meays in the second and Eammon Bradley in the seventh.

The Mustangs did all of their scoring in two innings, pushing across two in the second and five in the fifth.

Wysong had an RBI single in the second and moved to second on an error by the rightfielder. Brett Hoch folllowed with a run-scoring single.

David Manceaux singled home two runs in the seventh while Paulsen added a two-run double and Wysong an RBI double. Morningside finished with nine hits, two each by Wysong and Dave Schipper.

The Mustangs host Doane in a doubleheader today, beginning at 1:30.
