Congressman King says Bell's palsy won't stop him

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said although he is suffering from a condition called Bell's palsy, he will continue to serve his constituents in western Iowa.

The illness, which causes his face to droop, has forced King to scale back on public appearances. The congressman said it appeared about three weeks ago, and can be short-lived, or can last up to a year.

"It just showed up one afternoon. I just noticed that my face wasn't feeling right," he said from his office in Washington.

The Republican, from Kiron, said Bell's palsy is very common, and that two of his sisters-in-law have suffered bouts with the condition. It is a form of paralysis caused by a malfunction of the facial nerve. King said it is caused by a virus and constricts nerves.

Bell's palsy usually affects only one side, but King said it has affected both sides of his face. He expects it to clear up in a couple of weeks.

"It is nothing that slows me down," King said.

" Oh My, I have something in common with Steve King besides being an Iowa native. Bell's palsy is caused by the herpes virus and doesn't just put pressure on the nerves behind the ear, but destroys them. I swear I got mine from public transportation. "
