Iowa honors work of K-P principal

By Judy Hayworth, Journal correspondent | Posted: Monday, April 23, 2007
KINGSLEY, Iowa -- Randy Wiese was honored at the Iowa Boys' State Basketball Tournament with the School Administrator Award presented by the Iowa High School Athletic Association Board of Control.

The award recognizes Wiese, high school principal at Kingsley-Pierson Community School, as the 2007 school administrator who advocates for and administers successful athletic and activities programs that enhance the total education of students.

Wiese has served Northwest Iowa schools as an administrator the past 13 years.

A Schaller High School graduate, Wiese was involved in activities just as he encourages students to do today. He participated in chorus, track, basketball and football.

His experiences as student, teacher, coach, athletic director and administrator for 36 years have shaped his philosophy.

"The old statement is that extracurricular is the other half of education," says Wiese. "We don't hear that as much as we used to, but it is still extremely important for students to be involved in activities and sports.

"Each activity emphasizes good qualities, such as teamwork and sportsmanship," he adds. "An old friend once told me that kids are going to be involved in something, so it's good to be involved under professional guidance rather than activities that aren't appropriate for teens."

From O-A to K-P

Wiese was a teacher, coach and athletic director at Odebolt-Arthur for 23 years, junior high and high school principal at Sac City for three years and is in his 10th year at Kingsley-Pierson as high school principal, which includes three years as athletic director. Coaching duties have included football, cross country, girls basketball and girls and boys track.

As secretary for the Maple Valley Conference, he has spent many hours working on a project to ensure current activities continue for Northwest Iowa students. A new conference, the combination of the Boyer Valley and Maple Valley conferences, will be in place for the 2008-2009 school year.

"The main reason this new alignment came about is that two schools in the Boyer Valley asked to join the Maple Valley Conference as they felt their conference would possibly end up disbanding," he says. "Superintendents in our conference felt it better to be proactive rather than reactive to potential future changes in the conference and decided to ask if all the schools in the Boyer Valley would like to join with Maple Valley with the thought that stability would be a decisive factor.

"There's always a concern that change is scary, but I think the positives outweigh the negatives -- increased mileage -- for our students and thus our schools," he adds.

"Mr. Randy Wiese has been a guiding force in education in the Kingsley-Pierson Community School District for the past 10 years," notes Scott Bailey, K-P superintendent. "He has high moral values as well as high expectations for our students. His recognition at the boys' basketball tournament was well deserved."

Reflecting upon the 2007 school administrator award, Wiese says, "This award is an award that should be shared with everyone I have been associated with through the years: administrators, coaches, parents, students, officials, and friends and family. Everyone is really a big team and I've just been a small part in all of this. All of those people should feel good about this award, too. It's not just about me. It's a nice award for our school."
