Racism, bigotry and inequality are 'alive and well'

SIOUX CITY -- The author of a Letter to the Editor headlined "A double standard" in the April 22 Journal obviously extracted very little truth and understanding from the ongoing dialogue concerning the Don Imus issue.
Contrary to what some folks think they know or want to believe, it is NOT OK for anyone black, white, yellow or brown to utter demeaning, derogatory, sexist or racist words or comments over our public airwaves or anywhere else. That is simply unacceptable.
African Americans and others have been addressing this issue for a number of years in our community. Those who are responsible for the making and airing of this trash have and are being confronted about it.
The writer also states that we African Americans should: "... stop blaming the white people for their problems, too." "Slavery was ended a long time ago." "What you make and do with your life now is totally on you and you alone."
Yes, slavery is largely over with, but racism, bigotry and inequality are alive and well in Sioux City and all across America which prevents equal access and justice for too many African Americans.
America has not yet totally fixed the system that when adjusted will create that much needed "level playing field" where all folks have access to the "American dream." Until that becomes a reality, African Americans and other minority groups will continue to have difficult times in America. Who is in charge of the system? -- Richard E. Hayes
