Corporon defends Tri-State Masters title
By Barry Poe Journal sports writer | Posted: Thursday, May 03, 2007
It's fairly uncommon for a golf tournament to be held at three different courses, let alone three courses in three different states.
That, however, is what makes the Tri-State Masters, which unfolds this weekend, quite possibly the ultimate test in local golf.
The third Tri-State Masters gets under way Friday at Two Rivers Golf Club in Dakota Dunes. Saturday, it moves to Covington Links Golf Course in South Sioux City and the final round is set for Sunday at Sioux City's Green Valley Golf Course.
"I think this is the premier event of the year," said tournament director Scott Harmelink, who invented the 54-hole event, which was called the Siouxland Masters until 2005. "You have three courses that are totally different layouts, so you have to have the whole package to win this tournament."
Ayron Corporon, a former East High and Creighton University standout, is back to defend his title. Corporon defeated Dan Freed in a two-hole playoff last year after Freed won the inaugural event.
"You don't get a chance to defend very often and you get a chance to play three different courses," said Corporon, who also lost in a playoff in last year's River-Cade tournament. "It's a unique deal getting to play in three different states, so it should be fun."
Two Rivers, which plays host to the Interstate Amateur Championship the first week of June, demands accuracy with its tree-lined fairways and small greens. Green Valley is more of a wide open layout, while Covington Links is a combination of the two.
Corporon got off to a good start with a 2-under-par 68 in the opening round at Two Rivers last year. Playing in less-than-favorable conditions at Covington, with rain falling at the start of his round, he managed a 73 and then fought a strong wind for a 74 at Green Valley to force the playoff with Freed.
Last weekend was a productive one for Corporon, an accountant at Tyson Foods. He finished second in the Elk Point Early Bird on Saturday and teamed with Jason Pease to win the Western Iowa Best Ball at Whispering Creek on Sunday.
"I haven't been playing too bad lately," said the 2001 Men's City champion. "I had some vacation time to use, so last Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, I played 27 holes every day. I guess that's when you need to call yourself a golf junkie."
Corporon, who uses his length to his advantage, played the par-5s at Elk Point Country Club in a combined 7-under over 27 holes.
Hinton resident Freed, the reigning Men's City champ, is in the field and has to be considered among the favorites. Jeff Donaldson, who's won both a Men's City and River-Cade title, is competing, as is Dale Erwin, a two-time Men's City winner and former Interstate champ Bob Brummel of Orange City.
Harmelink reports that 87 players have entered, but adds that there are still three spots open to make it a full field of 90 and he will accept entries until this afternoon. Several top players from the area have opted to compete in the Iowa State Mid-Amateur at Des Moines Golf & Country Club. The Mid-Am is the first point event on the Iowa Golf Association schedule this season.
