'Wall' exhibit organizers aim to ID Vietnam vets who died

Local organizers are asking for help in identifying Siouxland veterans killed during the Vietnam War.

Plans are being made to honor those veterans when The Wall That Heals, the half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, is on exhibit Oct. 18-21 in South Sioux City. A Reading of the Names ceremony will be held at which family and friends can honor and remember loved ones for their service and sacrifice to the nation.

The public is asked to help find local veterans who died during the Vietnam War. Area veterans may not be found solely from searching the recorded names on The Wall because the official "home-of-record" used was where the person enlisted, not necessarily where the person was born or lived last.

Currently, 58,256 names are inscribed on the Memorial, including 1,442 recorded as being from Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota. In order to honor all Siouxland Vietnam veterans, the Planning Committee for The Wall That Heals is requesting help from the family and friends of veterans listed on The Wall who may not have a Siouxland community listed as their home of record. Searches for the names and cities of veterans can be done on the Virtual Wall on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Web site, www.vvmf.org.

Thanks to research by military historian, SMSgt. Larry S. Brooks, USAF (Ret.), several veterans who are from the area, but whose home of record listed another location, already have been discovered. Family members of other Siouxland veterans also have stepped forward to help in recognizing local Vietnam veterans named on The Wall.

To help in the search, information kits are available for display at class reunions from the Vietnam Era (1959-1975). Individuals who have information on local Vietnam veterans listed on The Wall or requests for class reunion displays should contact Mary McNamara at thewallthathealsssc@cableone.net or 712-281-5623.
